Why does everything in Hollywood get a reboot except Transformers? The cartoons get a fresh start every few years, why not the movies? I would prefer for Hasbro to start their combined universe attempt fresh for all properties, but alas it does appear Bayformers will go on. |

How big of a problem do you guys think international appeal is for G.I. Joe, what with it being "A Real American Hero"? And if it IS a problem, what if Hasbro continued the line under the Action Force brand? You could still mix in some of the Joe favorites, maybe labeling them as a G.I. Joe sub-team. I know, it sounds crazy, but I figured it'd be a fun idea to discuss.

They could make two different action figures, one is for kids and another for collectors.

Real military theme. Special forces soldiers from all over the world mix Action Force and GI Joe together. Please also make the villains based off politicians or corrupt business men that look real think of some of the characters in the series Strike force.

That being said, I do agree that there are some areas of G.I. Joe where editing in a little more realism would probably help things a bit. I don't know if it's the main fix that the franchise needs, but it could help a little in some areas here and there. |

Honestly I think IF Joe is to survive The Adventure Team is probably the best bet and sadly not in a collector friendly way. Children's toys continue to skew younger and younger. When we were 10, 11, 12, and even older we still played with action figures. From what I have observed with my own kids that's not the case any more. Playstation and Cell Phone Games are what I get asked for now instead of toys :(
So really the core age group to shoot for would be between 5 and 9. So somewhat younger than us (Whenever I say "us" I mean me and my friends when we were younger. Your mileage may vary of course). I think Transformers Robots In Disguise is a good model to follow. Lots of colorful characters having adventures, searching for lost items, and fighting the bad guys. No military theme. Stay away from the controversy. Give the guys super powers. Joe with his Eagle Eyes! Mike Power and his Atomic Limbs! Jane and her Super Science Pack! BULLETMAN SMASH! Cobra can have all sorts of robots and mutants to fight in very toyetic designs. Pepper in some ARAH characters with the classics. Ninja Adventurer Snake-Eyes next to Sea Adventurer on the pegs. The figures themselves as much as my heart says 100% compatible with what has come before. . . I'm not sure that'd work great here. Keep the 4" height but change the proportions, chunky but not completely kiddified. I'm thinking a less realistic more animated style. It needs to move but does it need ultra articulation? Did your Joes have ankles and wrists when you were little? No 5 POA but it doesn't need 20 either. Small vehicles to start. See where it goes. Branding. HUGE AT logo on the cardback. BRIGHT RED! Make it stand out and catch the eye. A short comic printed on the back. Even if they've never seen the tie in media, they will want this figure when it's staring down at them. They will NEED this figure once its in their hands and beg Mom and Dad for it. A cartoon. Again like Robots In Disguise or even better Ninja Turtles. No adult themes but doesn't talk down to much. Nods to the 80s toon without being too heavy with them. Start showing it BEFORE the toy line comes out. Concentrate on making a good cartoon. Don't get too complex, don't get too simple. Collecting legendary weapons, fighting monsters, that kind of thing. Cross Promotion. Oh look the that! The newest Optimus Prime has seats that fit Adventure Team figures! Big call outs on other products that are compatible. Maybe the AT vehicles combine with a Transformer? But not a special line of Transformers, just whatevers on the shelf. 5mm pegs, 3mm pegs, minicon ports, whatever it takes you could easilly add some cross compatibility and drive Joe sales. Hey is that one of the humans from Transformers in the Joe line? Yes it is. This could be a big selling point it spun right. I think there is still room for GI Joe to be a success, just not our GI Joe. But if they could revitalize the brand and make it a success again, they could use those profits for a collector focused line. And then everybody wins. |

Yeah that's pretty much it. Kids are done playing with toys at 9 years old. Although I think it might need to get smaller scaled like playskool Heroes.
I still think there's room for an exclusive Black line of about 8 extremely well made figures for the adult collector, but it will need to be the kiddos that save the line.

I mean, you're probably right. But parents are still buying toy guns and things like that for kids, right? I still see kids running around playing "Army/War", so I can't believe there's not room in their imaginations for military themed toys. Also, you mentioned as kids get older, they'd prefer video games and the like. I know this has been brought up plenty, but I really think there's space in the video game world for a G.I. Joe game that us old collectors and younger audiences would all love. Military shooters do so well in the video game market, and as long as the game isn't garbage, it would be a real shot in the arm for the franchise.
But, like I said at the beginning, you're probably right with the Adventure Team idea, but I'd love to find an alternative that agrees with the version of G.I. Joe that I grew up with. |
