I find this completely baffling. The internet is my first resort for anything I need. Heck, my wife buys her groceries on Amazon because it is easier than actually driving to the store.
As far as I'm concerned, anyone who doesn't offer DTC internet sales is a dinosaur... And we get screwed by case assortments because they can't /won't use 21st century technology. It is baffling to me. Most people don't buy their groceries online (yet), and to many folks, they might gladly buy electronics or video games or maybe even clothing online...but toys? Why bother when you can grab whatever's on the rack at Target/Wal-Mart/Wherever? The "collecting" aspect isn't there for them, so they don't really give a hoot about case assortments. |

It isn't that these folks don't buy stuff online. It's exactly as described above: Toys simply aren't a priority for them, so there's no need to bother searching online.

Also, I think a lot of kids don't really plan ahead what toys they want, short of making a Christmas or Birthday list. Usually it seems kids pick out toys at impulse in a store. "mom can I get a toy?? PLEAZZEEE!" and then pick from whatever is on the shelf in front of them.

This is why the toys need the cardbacks showing the figures that are available. I used to pick out who I wanted based on how cool the art was.

To me, the fundamental issue is that there is NO "one thing" that can save the franchise. There is no magic bullet of an idea, no one initiative, no one change that would alone elevate this franchise back to being a constant fixture on toy shelves.
But to save a franchise, one must know WHY a franchise is failing to being with. To me, two key issues are at play: 1. Hasbro, in the past 12 years, has had ENORMOUS issue in simply getting all their "ducks in a row" in terms of marketing, product support, innovation, and media. I can think of only two times (the launch of Sigma 6 in 2005, the launch of Rise of Cobra in 2009) where it seems Hasbro had their stuff together. This goes with another point of frustration: the failure to follow their own brand blue print. For all the fuss they've made about it since 2009 (and have followed to relative success in their franchise brands), they've failed to adequately apply it to GI Joe. 2. The current product range has seemingly failed to garner the long term interest of kids. And instead of experimenting with new expressions, they've doubled down on the niche collector audience, further driving the brand away from most retailers. To save the brand? Hasbro basically needs to suck it up, and finance a new expression of GI Joe with an aggressive marketing push. While a movie is a good "kickstart", they need to have a fresh animated expression ready to go to follow up (or salvage) whatever happens with said movie. They need to have consumer goods partners ready to go with merchandise supporting both film and animated series in a timely manner. They need to have multimedia efforts in place. In so far as toys...they need to do something fresh. And given the success of Robots in Disguise for Transformers...I suspect (expect) a more animated approach with a strong app tie in. We could go more "nitty gritty" with it...but that pretty much sums up what I think Hasbro needs to do. And I think at this stage, they don't have much to lose by trying something different with the brand in terms of toys and support.

If the kids aren't interested in the toys they aren't going to be interested in pictures of the toys. You are forgetting that one primary factor in your own behavior -- you were already interested in the figures to begin with, which is why images of the other available toys were exciting. |

I wasn't too impressed with Retaliation. They killed off Duke (which sucked) and didn't include many of the cool characters from ROC. I wanted to see Scarlet and Baroness and Destro. Having moved recently I dont remember buying any of the Retaliation toys.

I think there has to be a popular cartoon attached or the figures will never be popular enough to warrant the number of figures we'd all like to see. My idea is to have a weekly cartoon, with mostly the same core group of three or four Joes, working with Special Forces of other countries. Have those special forces from other countries as recurring characters. One week the Joes hook up with Mexico, the next Canada, the next Israel, the next Saudi Arabia, the next Canada again. Continue that trend so the Joes are seen as problem solvers who work with other parts of the world and then that cartoon could be popular every where. Then, how cool would it be for those teams to have action figures made. Satisfies everyone. Make the missions against Cobra who teams up with the Red Shadows, or several other terror organizations. Make it smarter by having phone apps that tie into it some how. And now I'm rambling...that's what happens when low blood sugar wakes you up and you decide to check out the 'tank while eating glucose tablets.

Except the last major Joe line -- Retaliation -- had that very feature and didn't seem to matter much.

You are forgetting that one primary factor in your own behavior -- you were already interested in the figures to begin with, which is why images of the other available toys were exciting. So the figures had no media to back them, and had nearly zero information about the characters or why anyone new to Joe should care. I wouldn't say Hasbro deserves all the blame, but it does feel as though some amount of care is missing from the equation. |

But Retaliation DIDN'T have card art. They also didn't have filecards. I wouldn't say these things are necessary, but they certainly help, especially with the limited amount of media behind the product. The Retaliation figures also befell the misfortune of both flooding stores before the movie, and outliving it.

I wouldn't say Hasbro deserves all the blame, but it does feel as though some amount of care is missing from the equation. There is hardly any evidence that individual character art and filecards drive interest in toys. Last edited by backhawkdown; 05-07-2017 at 09:58 AM.. |
