Between shipping charges, up charges and paying for a "collector" upgrade as to assure you don't get carded figs that a re beat to hell...you land up paying way more than at retail.
I just got a complete Wave 5 set of 5 figs from BBTS and it ran me $42.38 (total-w-shipping)...and BTW, the extra cost of "collector grade" wasn't even offered (that's normally an extra $8-10 for full waves). 5 figs @ $42.38 = $8.47/fig 5 figs @ $4.88 (Wal-Mart price) = $24.40 + 8% tax ($1.95) = $26.35 That's an extra cost of $16 or 61% over retail... The ONLY reason why I did this is because I have not been able to find any Wave 5 figs at retail anywhere. It was an act of desperation, not convenience. |

I do a lot of purchasing online now. I used to a be a hardcore toyhunter...hitting the stores everynight, morning and it was so bad that my body would wake up at early in the morning to hit the store (this is before our WM became a Super WM and 24 hours).
But I had a bad toy addiction and I'm glad that I don't do as much toy hunting now because frankly, I don't need to buy toys from every line. It's one thing to just collect Joe's but I would guess there are other people who have the bug that are collecting many different toy lines and also have the same problem of a growing collection, running out of space. Fortunately, I don't need to depend on credit cards but shopping online has curtailed a lot of the addictive habit I once had. But as far as why I purchased at a store instead of online, at the time, I was very picky about paints. So, at the time, it was very important for me to be at the store like Wal-Mart when they took stuff off the pallet. Or to look at the boxes and search the pallets and have them open the box up, so I can check the figures out. I still am interested in the paints but when you don't have the luxury to overlook several figures for best paints all the time, with the 25th Anniversary, at this point, I'll take what I can get from online. And at the same time, sparing me the time and gas money to not have to check every store in three counties.

I can't wait until this line is over and I can once again go back to a normal, non-hunting lifestyle.
The best advice I can give is that if the "hunting" becomes more important than the toy itself, then you know it's becoming a problem. I started to realize that I was getting into so many lines and buying things for the sheer feeling of hunting for them. I would peruse the toy forums and see what's hot...and then going after that certain figure to see if I can hunt the items first. And then when I found them...not even enjoy it, just stick it in bin and never look at it again, it was to move on to the next toy to hunt and the process continued. This is where the addiction can get bad, costly, etc. How I got out of hunting is because I started to look at the other friends who were doing it and talking to their girlfriends or fiance's telling me how it was destroying their relationship and then next thing you know, it was affecting mine. I had a storage built but what I was buying was taking over rooms, garage, storage. Also, I was into every toyline...GI Joe, SOTA Street Fighter, Transformers, Star Wars, Marvel Legends, DC Direct, TMNT, LOTR, McFarlane stuff, Family Guy, the list goes on. So, when you start looking at it as a sport of competitiveness to outlast, to beat the scalper, etc. and you really don't appreciate the things you buy (or even looking at them) but start savoring more on the win of the hunt and it becomes out of control when you start buying things that don't matter to you, then the problems can start to snowball. A lot of my GI Joe stuff are not opened but for me it's a good thing because knowing my nature, if I did...then I know I would get into army building and that is the last thing I need to get into..hehe..

I think it just depends on what you're after as to where you buy...
After reading this and other Joe and TF boards, seems like the hard-core collectors and the ones who have to have the latest and greatest first buy from the online retailers. On the opposite side of the coin, the people who don't have to have every figure in the set and who aren't picky about paint apps or card condition (not having to have case-fresh figures) buy locally. I have the luxury of having 6 Targets within a 20 mile radius of me so I can pick up new figures as I see them. I like to be able to "inspect" the paint apps and the assembly on my 25th figures, so buying locally allows me to do that. That said, I usually buy the unique Joe and Cobra characters locally and buy the multiples of the troopers (2 - 4 of each, I don't need or want armies) online. Of course, this strategy tests your patience and reading the posts describing the new figures and seeing the pictures of "coming soon" releases doesn't help either... Good thing patience is a virtue, though, since the Targets here are just getting the individual carded figs from the original 5 packs onto the pegs!!! Happy hunting, however you do it!!!!!! |

Since I'm from Montreal and all major stores are not selling the 25th Joes figs because the cards are not in both languages English / French I don't have almost the choiche to buy them online !
I bought all my joes 25th figures from BBTS because I find they have good prices compare to others online stores ! Also they have the Pile of Loot option that make you save money on shipping. I also have a few litle toys stores near me but they are selling the joes at around 15$ I did once the hunt from Montreal to Vermont but I don't feel like doin it each month ! But that one time was this summer and I was lucky at the K-mart when I find a Cobra 5-Pack |

When all else fails I shop online, and if I'm real desperate I use Evilbay.

Kndy,
I know how you feel, I used to wake up at 2:00am each morning just to hit Wal-Mart and search the skids of toys coming in...I collected Hot Wheels and roughly 20 or so Action Figure lines...for the same reason, to hunt... I finally came to my senses about 7 years ago, but for about 6 years it was a major addiction. Mr. Savage |

it is cheaper and more satisfying to buy at the store than online...
