When I was a kid one of my best friends used to bring his GI Joes over to play, but his 'style' of play was horrifying.
I hated to let him play with my Joes. He would set up huge battles, that part was normal. But he would "pitch" missiles, ball bearings, rocks, etc. as hard as he could at the figures to simulate the Joes or Cobras taking fire. If we were playing with planes, and I said "ratatatatat, I just shot your tail" he would literally DROP his plane on the floor and watch it break. Usually, it was easy to patch them up since only the loose parts would go flying, but occasionally he had to break out the electric tape. If a plane was dropping bombs on a tank, he'd drop a small rock or ball bearing on it. He loved to light figures on fire and had a small collection of figs melted from the waist down to simulate Cobras or Joes melting in lava. All in all, this WAS a fun way to play, but I never let him do the extreme stuff to my joes. He would call me names, but for the most part he respected my toys. Did any of you guys play this way? (Chris Rivera, are you out there?)

I used to take a magnifying glass and burn holes in my Joes to simulate bullet wounds. I mostly did this to the Joes that were already broken.

SHIVERS... I never did stuff like that to my good toys.. I would save the melting/bb gun abuse for the Cheap Green Army Men... but never my Joes.. I did set a couple of Star Wars figures tied to bottle rockets into the air though.
I'll say this though at least that kid knew what realism was.. I once sent a neighborhood kid home that was playing Joes with me because he kept insisting his Mobat could fly.

Nah I was always very careful with them (probably because I had to fight tooth and nail to get my parents to buy me toys).
I remember lots of long operations repairing Joes who had snapped at the waist. |

I had one of those 60 drawer sorting unit for nails and screws.
I put my older joes in there with all their gear, because they would be valuable one day. then I sold them at a garage sell for $1 each, then I found out they had become valuable |

I was the complete opposite. I would take care of my figures like they made of glass. My brother and I would separate the weapons and the figures for storage when we weren't playing, and as we got more figures it would take us dang near an hour to get all the weapons back on them. I didn't like to take them outside because I didn't want to get dirt or water on them.
Now, I take figures apart and Dremel on them and all for customizing purposes, but I don't like to destroy just to destroy, although I have thought about doing "tests" on extra figures I won't be using. Even then, I have a hard time thinking about that because I end up using lots of extra parts for customs sometimes.

We used to load up the APC with figures and light it on fire.

He wasn't a rich kid, just a kid whose parents split up and his dad spoiled him with toys cuz he wasn't around. So he had everything and it was ALL fair game.

There was this fad circa '84-'85 at an overseas base in Germany (Vogelweh) where a lot of the kids would take their Joe figures, tape them up with their legs spread eagle, and commence to "breakdancing" them on whatever surfaces that they could. I had an extra Tripwire that I used and he always 'headspinned' and 'windmilled' for longer than any challenger...
