Once again I'm at a crossroads as to whom I should vote for. Black Major? Data Viper?

I don't know either. They are all sort of equals at this point to me, give or take a few spots.
I wonder if it would be worth it to maybe change things up a bit once we hit 300. My idea would be take the top two from each vote, and place them one after the other. It's sort of similar to what we do with ties. Not sure how that would change voting patterns, but one wouldn't have to vote for the same character necessarily for ten polls if they got in sooner. People might be more honest with their votes and noms too. Lets be honest, there is not much difference between #301 and #351? Finishing is what might be driving us to continue voting. It's like the NFL draft on day 3. I think there's like 2 minutes between picks.

I have no idea what you're talking about, Loose Cannon. Why would someone have to vote for the same character for ten polls? Why would taking two winners change anything, other than speeding up how fast the poll completes with the trade-off of contributing to inaccurate results? There are lots of times where the 2nd place winner does NOT win the next poll. The people who voted for the winner may all want to vote for someone other than the 2nd place winner next time. And you say it makes people more "honest?" What? How? Why? Huh?
Sky Creeper or Satan are the only choices. |

Sky Creeper or Satan are the only choices. I do think the poll needs a slight refresh and poll 301 would be a nice milestone to begin but if speeding up the poll is what we really we want, we could go to 1-day polls, although we'll probably see a drop in total votes and nominations. On the other hand, inaccuracy has plagued the polls for a long time, so how more inaccurate can it get. Face it, if we took the five most popular troopers and put them up against the current leading five non-trooper nominees, most of the troopers would win first and some by a large margin. The system of counting cumulative nominations is one of the reasons for inaccurate results--resetting the nominations to 0 as you've done in the vehicle polls is more effective and efficient at getting the most popular candidates in the poll first--but I must admit it's fun to watch your favorite nominee climb up the list. It's more of a game really. I would like to hear what the others think of these ideas, though. There are about 20 of us who've been consistently nominating characters and I'd really to know what changes, if any, those loyal posters would like to see. Do we want more accuracy or more fun? But that was also an experiment done weeks after the poll officially ended, just to fill in slots 51-100 in a poll that died out from lack of interest. I think the best nom system is to let noms accumulate, but never let anyone nom the same choice twice, like I did in the top 50 Troopers. I think that got the best results. No one has to worry about strategizing or watching what other people are nomming. You just give your top 100 in slow motion. Last edited by JediJones; 12-03-2015 at 04:19 PM.. |

Getting a portion of the active membership, which is a portion of the site membership, which is a portion of the online community, which is a portion of the real Joe community is never going to be terribly accurate. Lets be honest here. This is for fun. Sure the top 30-50 are probably going to be the same give or take a spot or two, but after that? Its pretty much all fan-boy-ing in the rankings after that. Troopers I wouldn't really use as a fair comparison. They've been an anomaly to the voting since the poll started (except Heavvy Water that unloved sonovabitch) About half the poll membership loves them and swears by them, about half don't think they qualify as an individual character. It would be hard to say that any non-trooper on the poll would run away with it over any non-trooper who is currently in it. Beef at one point expressed an interest in re-running the poll in about 5 years once his current project wrapped up. I have no idea if that's still his plan, but in deference to him as the creator I'd be reluctant to reboot without him. At this point we're down to 30 regular voters. Usually 24-26 of those come in in the first day. Probably at least one of the laggers is a regular poster waiting to see if their vote will make a difference in the end to snipe something in case of a tie. Switching to 1 day polls now would make sense. Even 50 polls ago when I was thinking about it it was close to 25% of the votes that came in on the second day. Now we're looking at about 15%. That's a fair tradeoff if you are able to manage it. I would like to see us get in everyone at some point. We're no where close to done the American characters, let alone international ones (who have fared strangely poorly on the whole). my 2c. |
