Maybe this is more general GI Joe than toys, but I was wondering something about hard master and soft master. I have read their appearances in the original ARAH and some of the newer stuff, I think Snake Eyes Declassified.
In Japanese martial arts, which I have trained in for well, lets just say I don't want think about how long, martial arts are often talked about as hard or soft styles. Hard styles are generally like Karate with striking, soft styles are usually jujitsu and judo, as well as akido, which involve grappling. The hard and soft are not literal translations. Judo, the "gentle way" in Japanese, really means more like "yielding" using opponent's momentum against them, as opposed to hard, like karate where you block the opponent and counter attack. Anyway, you have the lean "hard master" and the well, not so lean soft master. Are they the masters of their respective styles, or is soft master just a nicer way of saying, fat master? |

I would say it is due to their respective styles. I can see Hard Master being the striker and Soft Master being the lock, holds and rondori trainer.

One does not find truth. It reveals itself.

I think it was both a way to describe their appearance and their methods of teaching. I don't think it involves hard or soft styles at all.

The Hard Master was a hard-ass, and the Soft Master always had a smile on his face.

Based on the Soft Master's Marvel appearances it was more based on his style and method of teaching. In the SS/SE comic he was a straight up dick.

Hey guys, thanks for the thoughts on this.
Sadly, my conclusion is more likely someone at marvel heard the concept of hard and soft styles and decided to make the hard and soft master, having no actual idea of the meaning. Or, maybe just a coincidence. |

Yeah, that "someone at Marvel" guy is well known for his lack of knowledge of japanese martial arts.
