GI Joe after more than 25 years of exemplary service finally decided to retire the venerable XP-14F Sky Striker. The search for a worthy replacement was concluded when the Pentagon brass decided to resurrect the YF-23A Black Widow II program.
The YF-23 was a competitor to the F-22 during the US Air Force's Advance Tactical Fighter (ATF) competition during the late 80's and ended in the early 90's. The doctrine for the ATF competition were as follows "Achieve air dominance through unprecedented stealth, speed, and superior fire power". Two design teams emerged to face this challenge. Lockheed Martin/ Boeing with the YF-22 and McDonnell-Douglas/ Northrop with the YF-23. Each design had a radical design innovation. The YF-22 had a Y-axis thrust vectoring and the YF-23 designed a cooling system behind the exhaust that makes the plane invisible to IR detectors. Each innovation contributed to something unique to each aircraft. The YF-22 was more maneuverable but the YF-23 was stealthier. Both aircraft performed exceedingly well but military aviation doctrine at the time made the YF-22 more attractive to the Air Force. However, current military doctrines, unproven technology, cost over-runs, and the F-22's problematic flight computer have made the Pentagon brass rethink the YF-23's possibilities. When GI Joe expressed interest in acquiring new aircraft, the Pentagon brass convinced General Clayton "Hawk" Abernathy about taking a good look at the YF-23. After careful consideration and deliberation with his senior staff which included GI Joe's top pilots, they decided that the YF-23 was the plane for them. The two existing examples of the YF-23 were pulled from protective storage at Edwards Air Force base and quickly restored to flight condition. The first flight was conducted on an unspecified date by senior Gi Joe pilot Capt. Brad "Ace" Armbruster in a top secret location in the Nevada desert. And the word is the GI Joe brass was enthusiastic about the aircraft and decided to go ahead with further flight tests. This pictures were taken aboard the USS Ronald Reagan off the coast of San Diego for the YF-23's carrier trials. Since the YF-23 is not equipped with an arrestor hook, it was placed on the carrier deck by crane. The take-off was done using the carrier's full flight deck. The YF-23's STOL capabilities were put to the test when it took off in 1100 feet at 125 knots with a 30 knot head wind. Several touch and go's on the carrier's deck were also reported. The pilot at the controls is unconfirmed however it is rumored that Gi Joe's second senior pilot Lt. Gregory "Slipstream" Boyajian was seen on the carrier deck prior to the flight. The Aircraft (POV1) sat on the rear of the deck prior to take off. As mentioned earlier, because of the YF-23's lack of Carrier Equipment it had to do a full deck rolling take-off with full flaps and afterburners. Right after take off. A couple of high speed passes prior to the first touch and go.

Nice job! Now that smaller company JSI beat Hasbro in sellling a huge 42 inch F14 Tomcat. Its time Hasbro do something just like what you've nicely drawn and took the time to do. Joe desrves his beautiful own "BMF" sized Skystriker, a YF-23 in 1:18 scale!
