Which year do you think was the best one for GI Joe? Use whatever criteria you want.
For me, it is 1985. Many of the figures introduced became icons (Snake eyes and Timber, Flint, Lady Jaye, Shipwreck, Twins, Dreadknoks, 1st Sgt. Slaughter, Crimson Guards etc..) In my opinion, some of the best vehicles (Flagg, Hydrofoil, TTBP, Mauler) The cartoon moved to daily instead of mini-series The comic series was rolling with the raising of cobra island plot I feel like 83-87 Joe was pretty much great, but 1985 stands out to me, how about you? I have to agree. 84 was a great year too, but 85 it was flying on all cylinders. 86 was a great year as well, but I think it was sort of riding the coat tails of that 85 year. I believe 1985 Marvel GIJoe was the most popular comic in America.

1985.
Great assortment of figures and vehicles. Considering next year will be the 30th anniversary of that line, it would be great to see a arah remake of something from it.....i can dream right?. |

Can I pick a tie between 1984 and 1985? 1984 was incredible for Cobra: Baroness, Storm Shadow, Firefly, Zartan; so many classics Joes: Roadblock, Recondo, spirit, Duke, Ripcord.
But then 1985 had SE and Timber, Flint, Lady Jaye, Dusty, Shipwreck, the CG. I would say best year for Cobra: 1984; best year for Joe 1985. |

Great question, Ive been thinking on this myself quite a lot lately. Its a tough call, my default answer is usually 84 because that entire years line up was fantastic from top to bottom and as a kid i went bats&$t crazy for it. However, Im starting to lean towards 85 as well, with the expanded figure line up (and all great ones) plus the expansion of cobra troop builders and the flagg I think your correct.
ID probably say 1985, 84, 83, 86, 87, 90 in that order. (1990 is so vastly under rated and really was an epic assortment...other than the battle bunker) |

1985 definitely seems like the high point to me. You know they were doing something right when they made a 2nd version of SE that proved to be more popular and iconic than the original. Of course, 1986 pulled that off to a lesser extent with Hawk.
1985 probably had the most Joes that were very well-defined as personalities. It's a clean sweep for the single-carded Joes. In other years there were always at least one or two that were a little weaker as characters, Airborne, Blowtorch, Iceberg, Sci-Fi, Short-Fuze, etc. And obviously starting in 1987 they really started lacking memorable personalities. It's true that 1984 gave us Storm Shadow, Zartan and the Dreadnoks if you go by their cartoon debut. Baroness was technically in the comic in 1982 and the cartoon in 1983. But 1985 gave us the Crimson Guard which is just as iconic as any of those. And it was the first year to start expanding the ranks of Cobra Troopers beyond variations on the half-masked faces. Storm Shadow of course pushes 1984 over the top as a more important year for Cobra. I think 1987 had slightly more original vehicles/playsets than 1985. But obviously there were very few from 1987 that became iconic. Looking at 1983-1986, there really are about 10 vehicles or playsets from each year that qualify as iconic and fan-favorite. In some ways you could make the case that 1983 was the best year for vehicles/playsets due to the HISS, FANG, Skystriker, Dragonfly, and headquarters. 1984 has about that many important vehicles but it had no big playset, so that hurts it. 1985 had some good vehicles that didn't quite replace past iterations in iconic status, like the Mauler, AWE Striker and Silver Mirage. But it did have the very pivotal Flight Pod and Moray on the Cobra side. More importantly it had the TTBP and the Flagg, two terrific playsets. But it was a disaster on air vehicles. 1986 was itself no slouch with the Terror Drome, Firebat, Tomahawk, Night Raven, Thunder Machine and HAVOC. Ultimately 1983 and 1986 had a better vehicle line-up than 1985, but they are not strong enough on figures to win the year. If 1984 had been better on vehicles, it might have topped 1985, but the lack of a playset ruins its chances. This thread needs a poll. Enough slots for 1982-1991. |

85' is the best in my opinion, but I always was fond of 89'. A great version of SE, the best version of RnR, a solid Stalker not to mention Slaughters Marauders and Night force. Night Viper and Alley Vipers, Python Patrol and some great reissued vehicles. 1990 is vastly underrated.

1985 would be a runaway winner for all the reasons already mentioned, but the first full season of the Sunbow cartoons was especially epic.
The poll should be for second best, and I might vote for 1988. The cartoon was done, but we still got some great figures like Hit n Run, Shockwave, Repeater, Destro's Iron Grenadiers, and some new Cobra troops. The Marvel comic was also arguably at its peak with the main series actually being published twice a month for awhile plus side series like Special Missions were going on. |
