"It was often a matter of question whether the character of Decimator represented a type of Cobra trooper or a specific character. This is even more confounding due to the lack of any other fiction depicting the character. The 25th issue of G.I. Joe: America's Elite included a backup feature that presented a threat matrix that the Joe Team faces. It would seem to indicate that Decimator was meant to be a unique character."
Even the joe wikia seems a bit uncertain... This is from his filecard: "The wide angle image-intensifier unit built into the DECIMATOR's helmet offers him a 180 view in almost complete darkness. The image he sees is compressed in the same manner used for wide-screen movie titles when they are shown on TV. In essence, he can keep the target in front of him at all times and get a perfectly clear shot at it without ever turning his head. This is extremely advantageous when fighting a speeding vehicle on a flat beach! Everything is referred to as a singular male. It is therefore completely explicit that it is a single individual being referred to in the card. The only point of confusion is the unnecessary use of "the" before Decimator. But one typo is more likely than five, so the card indicates he is a unique character, not a trooper. Add to that his inclusion as an individual on the WWIII Cobra cover, and its unquestionable that it should be "he" not "them". Why is there debate exactly?? |

The filecard leaves it totally ambiguous. Just read S.A.W. Viper's card. The whole first paragraph is written the same way, with singular pronouns.
http://www.yojoe.com/action/90/sawviper.shtml The fact that he appeared in a recent comic as an individual doesn't prove what Larry Hama or Hasbro's original intent was. I think it's fair to say he's more established as a unique individual because of that, but the original intent on both him and Vapor is not known for sure at this point. Of course, Action Force comics had Copperhead used as a generic trooper, so one comic book doesn't necessarily define a character. |
