I'm less interested in defending fandom or creating a hierarchy than I am in getting at what it means to be "into G.I.Joe". There is tremendous focus on collecting, and I guess sometimes as a non-collector, I feel like either I am missing out on part of the communal experience - but also that some people who focus on collecting may be missing out on other aspects of the brand too, if that makes sense? |

Love the stories and characters, love the toys. A lot of folks with no other Joe love, still have deep fondness for the Marvel Silent Issue. They are still fans, no?

To me being a Joe fan means remembering coming home from school around 4 and sitting down and watching a cartoon episode. It means remebering those and now you know clips after every show. Now as an adult, taking those memories and reappreciating those shows from a different perspective, then getting excited all over again like that litttle kid when I see those characters on Tv that match up with my action figures that I proudly own.

Although I no longer buy toys, I still have an interest, albeit limited, in G.I. Joe. I always will. It represents a childhood happiness and I've given it a comfy home in my memory. It'll probably never again occupy the forefront of my consciousness or a foremost spot in my psyche like it did as a child, but it'll always be part of me. We are, after all, our experiences.
I suppose it also depends on how one defines "fan." I dig G.I. Joe, the sports teams of my alma mater, old british bikes (and cars), two makers of new Italian bikes, a good stout, a decent smoke and a nice single malt, but I can't say I'm a "fan"--as in fanatic--of any the actual brands/makers. |

If you know and love a big hit from some band, but don't really know the rest of their music, are you a fan? Or do you just really like that one song? |

The only true test to see if you are a fan of GI Joe is if you collected the ROC birthday plates, cups, and napkins.
I'm sure somebody will remember what I'm talking about. |

I have a decent sealed arah collection and do not consider myself as big a fan of the Joe line as most people here. I mostly love the memories and card/box art. I watch the cartoon once in awhile and enjoy it....never read the comics (never got into comics) and have hardly any idea what background stories each character possesses. I enjoyed the movies for what they were and was glad they kept the line going. I collect both the new sculpts and vintage arah figures. A few people here know so much about the line, I just follow their replies and learn.
