In 1985, I got my first two GI Joe figures off the toy store shelf (Alpine & Baroness), and started watching the Marvel-Sunbow cartoon every day after school. At first I kept it on the DL, but then I found out that EVERYONE my age was doing exactly the same thing.
That got us all talking about GI Joe, and inspired a bunch of us to learn everything we could about the modern US military. It's been a lifelong interest that inspired many of my friends to enlist or seek appointments to US military academies. We attribute that - no joke - to our love of GI Joe. Which brings me to the titular question: Do NINJAS ruin GI Joe? You know, A Real American Hero? Ninjas are an interesting story hook, but they're not really among the threats faced by US fighting men and women. Ninjas are cool, but the GI Joe team is and should be made up of.. you know... soldiers. Joes. Army Rangers, Recon Marines, SEALs, Special Forces and PJ's. I get that it's a toyline, but it's not exactly a fantasy either. These things exist in reality. It's just my opinion, but salting that mix with a bunch of ninjas kinda diminishes the value of those characters who completed Ranger School, or Special Ops School, etc... GI Joe is supposed to be a Real American Hero. If I had my 'druthers, I say No Ninjas.

I wanted to be a ninja when I grew up because of Gi Joe but I agree it shouldn't be the mane focus and not everyone should be one. It should be there but at a very minimum.

Nah, didn't ruin GI Joe. Enhanced it IMO. I didn't know it was ruined anyway, news to me.

It's funny that you have a problem with ninjas but not fatal flurrys, Women re-engineered to breathe under water and synthoids. Ninjas reality based and do/did exist in the real world. I personally found ninjas to be wonderful in the 80's.

I understand that a lot of people want G.I. Joe to be "realistic" but if you remember they started out as a fantasy type group that fights threats the "average " military can't handle or wouldn't even believe exists. If you were to get rid of ninjas then Zartan doesn't fit, the Drednoks, crystal ball, snake eyes etc. The reason i fell in love with the joes to begin with was for the fantasy side of things. Yes Ninjas belong.....

No Ninja, No Joe
Know Ninja, Yo Joe! SnakeEyes was a soldier that also happened to be a trained ninja. eventually he brought others of his fold into the team and even trained other soldiers in the way of the ninja. this enhanced the joe team with additional special skills and combat abilities... to fight clones and robots, undead spirits, monsters, other dimensional beings, and.... aliens. |

No. Ninja's are awesome. And Roadblock being the "Ultimate Ninja Commando" is the best... ever.
