Only if they keep trying to redo ARAH figures. I think if they go back to POC style action figures it will help. They can release some as wave 1 of the G.I. Joe 3 line while they wait for the movie production to start. That they don't have to rush out a limited articulation line like they did for Retaliation.

One of these days everything will end. The earth will be consumed with fire. Everything and everyone we know will burn or melt, and become atomized.
Have a nice day! Seriously, though, nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain. Just kidding! I think one of these days, GI Joe will end. When is hard to say. But seriously, though, nothing does last forever. It's hard to say what life is in a be like even a year from now, much less 5, 10 or 50 years from now. Who knows if, in 50 years, Star Wars will even be relevant. I don't think in the very distant figure that GI Joe is going to be relevant to the up and coming generation.

It may or may not be ending now, but it's been one hell of a ride.

GI Joe will be dead by 2064.
We'll probably all be dead by 2064. We'll all definitely be dead by 2114. Yer kids'll probably be dead by 2114. Humanity as we know it will be dead by 8164. Earth'll be baked to a cinder by 6 billion years from now. In two trillion years, the universe will be dying... |

Fans more than anything want to see accurate-looking recreations of the original figures in their original costumes brought up to modern toy design standards (hence the popularity of concept case figures like Gung-Ho, Lady Jaye, etc.). Fans are open to new characters and costumes just like they were in the original line. But what most don't want to see are the original characters redone in "realistic" military costumes and color schemes that suck the fun out of the comic-book and cartoon nature of G.I. Joe. That's what the movies tried to do and they were an epic failure. POC tried to follow in the design mindset of ROC and almost failed itself, before they went back to the proper, colorful roots of G.I. Joe that fans love and started seeing non-stop sell-outs (at least until the dull Renegades figures debuted). We don't need any more "City Strike" reimagining of Beachhead, Firefly, Duke, Dusty, Hawk, Snow Job, Alley Viper, Snow Job, Snake-Eyes, Destro, etc. in drab, dark, "realistic" colors. What sells are quality remakes of the exact original 1980s figure designs, creative new characters and very occasionally new costumes or repaints of certain original figures that keep to the spirit of the original line. |

The brand is cyclical. It "died" in the 70's with the decline of Adventure Team. It "died" in the 90's after Star Brigade. It dies off for a while, but nostalgia and brand strength bring it back eventually. In the future, will it be a direct continuation of what we have now? Maybe not, but it is a strong enough piece of our pop culture to ever truly die.

From what I've read around here on the tank and other places it seems more like Joe didn't die in the 90's of natural causes but was shot in the back of the head execution style by the Kenner staff after Hasbro bought them out and merged with them.
Joe will probably get another big break in a few years. Disney is already starting to move more of it's Star Wars toys to Mattel as well as other brands they own. Disney isn't too pleased with how Hasbro has handled the star wars brand, the license runs out in 2018. Maybe sooner if Disney does to Hasbro what they did to Dark Horse comics. Anyways that will leave Hasbro with a massive gap in their toy lines, not to mention profits. Hasbro will have to fill that gap with something and GIJoe I think makes the best sense. They can do to it what they've done with Transformers and not have to pay anyone a license fee for it. |
