I'm thinking more along the line that one of the artist may have been a WWII collector, and had a little fun merging his work with his hobby. The sports patches aren't as well known as the military uniform patches so they're the perfect ones to sneak into the design of a character. I believe the similarities are to strong to deny.

To be fair, the bottom line is unless someone directly asks the original artist (whoever that may be) what their inspiration was behind the design of the art on the 1985 Keel Haul figure, nobody can say for sure.
I still maintain that it's a significant stretch of the imagination. And not for nothing, people who collect Nazi memorabilia frankly make me uncomfortable. |

Maybe next time, Hasbro/GIJoe Club should quote the damn all persons fictitious disclaimer to be safe, right?
Quote:
All characters appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Grown men who collect children's toys frankly make me uncomfortable. Sounds like a foolish blanket statement, doesn't it? I don't say this as a WWII German militaria collector (I think a few photos and a dogtag hardly a collection make), but as a collector none the less. I bet you there are more deviants collecting toys than there are actual National Socialists/sympathizers/88ers with serious militaria collections. :shrugs: As to the topic at hand, the eagle as a martial symbol dates back until at least the Romans. Does the sleeve patch in question have a vague resemblance stylistically to Nazi-era German adler? I suppose so. Did the designer get his inspiration from those evil Nutzi eagles? I'm with Orezona on that. Just can't say. Last edited by Konigstiger; 06-04-2014 at 08:45 AM.. |

Rudat (the designer) said on his DVD Operation Blastoff that he used real military symbols on the figures he designed intentionally. He also stated his love for military history.
Heavy Metal's Belt Buckle is one of those examples. Using a modified Nazi symbol may have been controversial, but it is not out of the realm of possibility.
