It's common across all franchises that there are multiple versions.
Star Wars is the only one that has stayed relatively true to one central storyline across all media and that's because the Lucas People keep an iron grip on it. Superman changes, X-Men change, Batman, etc.. Think of it as Batman. First there was the Batman TV Show which was nothing like the Batman Comic (Sunbow and Marvel). Time goes on that the TV show goes away and gets updated multiple times (Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond and now Brave and the Bold) and the comic gets changed (the normal series all 20 of 'em, Dark Knight Returns, All-Star Batman and who knows how many other interpretations). Then you get a new movie thrown into the mix (Batman Begins and The Dark Knight). Also can't forget the original Batman movies. So now, currently, you have 3 versions of Batman out there. Movie, Cartoon and Comic book. Also, the comic book is now sporting a new person under the Batman name (not Bruce Wayne), where the cartoon and movies still have Bruce Wayne. G.I. Joe is not the exception to this, it's just playing along with all the other franchises that cross over to multiple media.

Isn't this the case with other "brands" too? A lot of the time there are different arcs and genesis of characters. I always knew Nick Fury as a white dude, but somewhere he's black. There are always going to be differences like his because different interpretations appeal to people differently.
About the only franchise that take any effort to hold to itself to one continuity is Star Wars and even that's got its share of white out and pencil notes in the margins. |

I, personally, like the different versions of GI Joe out there. It's fun to see how they change it for each interpretation. Do I complain about some of them?....a little. But, that's only because they did something that I, MYSELF, didn't like. Sigma six was pretty cool to me. I just wish I was able to get those figures at the tail end of the line. VvV, not too bad. The one that I thought was a mistake through and through?....GI Joe Extreme....yeah...not so extreme. And it wasn't REALLY GI Joe(sigh).
Ultimately, we can't all live in the GI Joe universe the way we want to. I understand where you're coming from Nerdsgetchicks. Some people prefer more uniformity. But, there's obviously something that keeps you coming back to GI Joe!

Says the 3 month member with only 300 posts... ;-)
They may talk about how he got it, but Duke has a scar as an homage to the original GI Joe from 1964. I find it funny that someone who doesn't know this is complaining about continuity and respect for the past of the GI Joe franchise. |

I can't remember where I read it, but that's what I read. It makes perfect sense too.
