I really wouldn't do anything different that I did 20+ years ago. Thanks mom. Actually I would get an extra U.S.S. Flagg and the original 13 since to keep carded

I'd definitely get every officer and trooper I found.
I might also have got a set to keep carded, a set to display loose, and a set to play with.
The Sears Missile Command Center is also the first thing I'd go for. I actually had that as a child. Still have the three action figures (including the Mickey COBRA Commander!) but the cardboard lasted maybe a week in my 8 year-old hands.

I'd hope i'd taken better care of the figures. Not just destroyed etc some. Taking exacto knife to their heads etc. Not taking em apart, and for some strange reason my sister always hada borrow my Grunt figure to play with her little Barbie type figures. It was always Grunt nobody else.

I would pretty much do the same as I did as a kid......but if I woke up in 1982 I would definitely buy at least one or two of everything through the entire line.....plus a few winning lottery tickets as the years rolled by.

If i knew then what i know now, i would have taken better care of my figures. I would have asked my mom to buy me the vehicles which are next to impossible to get at a good price today. I would have still played with my toys, but i would have taken care of them so i would still have them today. BTY, i also wouldn't have traded my old 82 figures for my brothers newer figures from the late 80's and early 90's...lol
Selling my entire collection... Check it out...

So if today was 1982, no one would have any idea that the cheap piece of cardboard would be worth anything.
So your entire premise is based off having prior knowledge of what things would be worth in the future, which would be buying based on investment.
Now if it was 1982 again, I'd do alot more troop building.
Anyone that says they'd keep 'em MOC or take better care, that's looking at it from an investment point of view. As a kid starting collecting Joes, did anyone seriously look at it that way? So if it was 1982 again, why would your buying/playing habits change?
