Here's a funny story from today:
I'm an elementary school teacher, and we met for our teacher training today. One of the first things we did was make up paper pennants that shared something about ourselves that possibly others didn't know. Well, a few people knew it, but not many. So I drew a quick, impromptu pic of Dark Helmet (of Space Balls fame) playing with toys (meant to be me, with an additional mini Dark Helmet as my son). See pic below. Not afraid to go there...even though I knew I'd have to explain my toy hobby AND the movie reference. ;) I'm not one dimensional in my interests, so I was able to pull it off better than most. They laughed along with me and asked if I thought about selling them. I told 'em I had a few offers before, but no interest in doing that; they're for me and/or my son! But still, after I explained myself, they said I should probably call myself a "toy renovator" as opposed to a toy collector (since I customize); sounds less creepy. I had to laugh at that one, knowing the stereo-typed 40+ year old living in his mom's basement that came to their minds (and, of course, followed shortly in conversation). ANYONE else have interesting stories to share about coming out of the Joe collecting closet?

Teacher inservice sucks.
I tell all my coteachers and students that i collect Joes, Star Wars and read comics. I dont give a rats butt if they think it is weird. They all comment on my t shirts during inservice week, and I coach in comic t shirts. |

It blows my coworker's minds when I tell them I collect Joes.

I showed pictures of my collection at work, most 40+ year old workers can't unterstand it...but we are in Germany, they didn't grow up with G.i.Joe... and i don't care about negative opinions about my hobby.

I don't necessarily care about negative opinions either; I don't need others' support to function. However, I enjoy being what I consider "well-rounded." And therefore, I find it enjoyable to tell people about another dimension of my personality. For those who listen politely, I don't go much further. For those who ask questions, I begin to divulge a little more. If I ever find someone who is blown away, I may have just found a new Joe friend for life.
That's how I look at it. But let's hear the positive and/or negative outcomes. May be some interesting situations left untold. ;)

I just started a new teaching job, and one of my new colleagues had conducted a search for my name and stumbled onto my photos... by the time I showed up for in-service, several people knew I photograph toys.
