Noted....I was referring to the bulk of the Rangers that I've met and know. I wasn't aware of the 75th....but I feel like I learned something new today.
Same with the Marines Recon. I'm under the impression that it's similar to the rangers....where most of the Recon are not considered SF but there are a few units that are attached to SF/Seals. Hell, I was an MP in the Air Force for 6 years (currently in the Reserve) and there are special duties for us to attach to PJ units or Combat Control Units (Air Force special forces equivalent). I find it hard to believe that a Joe fan has never heard of the 75th. They have a very exciting history that can be traced directly to WWII Rangers and Merrills Maruaders and even further back unofficially to Roger's Rangers of the French and Indian War. They are America's shock troops plus more. They have conducted numerous parachute assaults in the last 30 years into Grenada, Panama, several in Afghanistan (The Rhino assault was on the news in October 2001...) and officially at least one into Iraq to capture a critical dam that if breached could have stopped or delayed the ground assault to Baghdad. Take a few hours - look them up. Use the internet. Do some research. Oh yeah - Pre-Ranger? only thing it counts for is for a unit to certify that someone is ready to try out for Ranger School, the toughest 60 odd days of your life without actually being in combat |

I seem to recall Larry Hama saying once that the majority of the Joes would've gone through Ranger training prior to joining the team, making them "tabbed" Rangers. Obviously, the pilots and members of other military branches wouldn't go through the course, and I'm not sure whether, in his world, Scarlett and Lady Jaye would have done so either.

both Jaye and Scarlett are listed as Ranger graduates on their filecards, even if in real life, at the time, that would've been impossible.

75th Ranger Regiment ran multiple operations in Iraq including the battle in Falujah, the overthrow of Ramadi and were part of the QRF force sent in to rescue the now famous SEAL team members of operation Red Wing.
For everyones understanding and clarification, Rangers are a highly trained Army Soldier sent in to secure areas, extract high value assets, and assist in clearing out know hostile areas. SF Soldiers, including the Green Beret are typically used to train an occupied countries army in order to fight for themselves. SOF guys like the SEALS and MARSOC operators operate in small platoons and are used for their special "get in and get out" skills, trained snipers, demolitions experts, and recon duties. I was a member of the Navy's Riverine Forces from 2003-2008 and served with many of the above mentioned warriors. Regardless of the "tab" they wear on their arms, each and every one of them will tell you that the grunt soldier, marine, sailor or airman on the field downrange, fight just and hard and deserve just as much respect as and SF, SOC, or any other elite unit. At the end of the day...it's all one team one fight. I imagine that is what the Joes believe as well (stepping down from soap box now) God Bless America! |

I consider Hit'n Run 10th Mountain Division which is "Light Infantry" now. Since 10th mountain is a historic moniker like Cavalry is no longer horses and 10th mountain is no longer snow & mountains. But back in the day of WWII, like in the days of Bazooka's and flamethrowers, these snow & mountain characters might be in that Division. So Hit'N Run would be with Alpine, Snow Job and the other arctic/mountain joes, you might even consider Doc an enlisted medic or an officer doctor part of the 10th Mountain Div.

Snake Eyes and Stalker present an interesting situation. Obviously Stalker is intended to be a full-on Ranger per his MOS. Given his position in Vietnam (LRRP Team Leader), it's not surprising he would be a Ranger.
LRRPs weren't required to be Rangers, though. Generally team leaders were graduates of either Ranger school or the famous "Recondo" course. So Snake-Eyes very well may not have been a Ranger during his time in Vietnam, since he wasn't a team leader. However, depending on whether you're a file card "literalist" that only believes Joes are qualified in a school if it's specifically noted on their filecard, or whether you infer some things based on what it says about the characters as a whole, it would be quite likely that a large number of Joes would be Ranger qualified without actually having it specifically listed, Snake-Eyes included. Then again, the filecards and various media are horribly inconsistent as to whether the Joes are all "the best of the best" or whether they're basically a mix of misfits and elite soldiers that somehow manage to be greater than the sum of their parts. Heck, it's debatable that some members of the Joe team weren't even in the military prior to joining the Joes! The fact that a huge number of Joes are E-4s, while admittedly a bit of a contrivance on the part of Larry Hama to keep the Joes from being "top heavy," is also rather unrealistic in the modern context, where generally anyone that's an active (non-support) member of an elite special operations unit is at least an E-5 (in fact, you can't even go to the training for Delta, the unit upon which G.I. Joe was loosely based, until you're an E-5). Not to mention that many of those E-4s have qualifications and backstories that make you go, "Uh..-why- is this guy only an E-4 again?" If nothing else, it's been implied in several comics that the Joes undergo a period of intensive training prior to becoming active Joes, and it would be rather surprising if Ranger school weren't part of that training for many of them. Another thing to take into account is how many different hands have been in this pot since 82. If you wanted to search "who was/had a ranger or ranger training" 1st you would need to specify which "lore" your talking about. When Hama wrote the comics and filecards, That is one era. Then you have that tweener time with all sorts of crazy comic books that were trying to recapture ARAH...Then you have..NOW. Is what Im trying to say, is if your talking about "stalker". Since his original release, and AFTER issue 155 there have been MANY hands in the lore. So much so that Im a comic nut, and its hard for me to figure out what is what in the in between time. (you guys know what runs im talkin about) Then the modern time (now) If you ask me, I would think being a "GIJOE" Surpasses any other fighting force. GIJOE is top tier. So it would make sense for them to be "ranger qualified" and such.. But if you go back, and read literally the filecards and marvel comics, you would get different results than if you say started reading from 2000 on. One of my best friends in the world was 82nd. He worked with rangers all the time. At THAT time, before the reformation of the military, Rangers main priority were the strategic capture of airfields. Sure they could do tons of different things, But That was the primary MO at THAT time. You look at Snake Eyes now for example..I would say he had been through every course in the military he could. He loves that shit. In his off time he relaxes by cleaning and taking apart his Uzi. BUT< If you read the marvel universe from the 80's you get the idea, he served in Vietnam, Came home, went to Japan, Came home to live in the mountains, got recruited by stalker and before you know it they are all loaded up on GIJOE's first FACE BURNING mission on the roster....so the "lifer military guy" can apply to the "modern Snake Eyes" but not the Marvel.. At least that is MY interpretation
