You know, I'm thinking to the Marvel run and, of course, the cartoons, and I can't remember many Joes having any romantic personal life outside of Flint and Lady J and Scarlett and Snake-Eyes. Duke and Scarlett flirt with one another in the cartoon, as do Shipwreck and Cover Girl, but nothing really is made of it.
No Joe that I can ever recall had a child except Mainframe mentioning having an ex-wife and kids in the cartoon. In the episodes where the Baroness kidnaps family members of Joes, none of them were wives/children. I don't know much about real-life military, but is it against some code for special covert ops type-people to have their own family? |

Shipwreck and Covergirl are involved, much to Clutch's dismay. And Ripcord had Candy until she exploded.
Also, Chuckles 2.0 has Jinx. |

I think that personal relationships are kind of a drag to write in when you only have so many panels in which to tell an entertaining story complete with good action.
To be honest, I don't care how sick Dusty's mom is so long as he drowns a Cobra trooper in sand.

Well, one of the "rules" given to all writers of the cartoon was that there was to be absolutely no sexual stuff mentioned or implied in an episode.
It's a military comic... sometimes the romantic stuff was boring to me as a kid. Ever watch The Unit? The commando stuff is cool, the homelife drama, not so much. But to get into GI Joe took a huge commitment, when you're focused on your career like that, you don't make room for family. Star Trek touched on that a bit. Kirk mentions several times the woman in his life was the Enterprise (Of course he still made room for the ladies) and Picard spoke of regret on not having a family of his own. It's really hard to sustain a normal relationship with a woman in a conventional military unit. This is especially true given the multiple deployments and field training exercises we face.
It's ten times more difficult when the person is a part of a Special Operations unit. Most of my buddies are staying single, divorced or going through some intense hardships in their marriages, and the ones who are SF or Rangers have it even worse. It's really hard to live like this while maintaining a marriage and children. |

Besides, I think it would be hard to go into a hot zone thinking of a family and what they would do without you OR if you cold never see them again. I would think that focus on your objective would be or could be seriously diminished if that were to happen. Lord know I would find it difficult if not impossible to focus if I Were thinking of my family. I'm not hardened by life in the military, but I doubt that those feelings and thoughts go away.

It's quite true that military in general and special operations in particular have about the highest divorce rates out there.
Depending on the interpretation, G.I. Joe "isn't supposed to exist" which just adds another layer of complication to any potential romantic entanglements (now not only are you away from home all the time, but you can't tell your wife/family anything about your job). It's not too surprising that most Joes have little in the way of romantic life. There are some that I could see eventually trying (Stalker's marriage in the DDP books seemed like a pretty natural outgrowth of the character), but by and large...not many. There are military folks that can make a marriage work in just about any assignment/environment, but it requires a lot of patience, a very understanding wife/family, and in most cases, eventually involves the military member of the family agreeing to take a "less intensive" (Non-SpecOps) job after a certain amount of time so they can spend more time with their family. The Village People AKA GiJoe, with a few exceptions, were all involved with each other. Look at the way alot of them dressed. This fully integrated team was way ahead of their time. Don't ask Don't Tell & Defeat Cobra...
