But is the material and labor cost the same? I'd say it's probably more (hence why prices go up even though the means to produce things get better).

I don't really mind the re-use of parts and molds... in fact, I'm all for it if the practice significantly keeps costs down. What bothers me more is the occasional lack of imagination and creativity with the re-use. Some figures just don't look like they're well thought-out in terms of being a distinct and recognizable update of a character's design (the Gung-Ho twins -- the Leatherneck that came with the AWE Striker and Cutter -- are the first to come to mind).

I don't see the need for a new complete mold unless the new characters is significantly or drastically different like the Nemisis Warrior.
I'm more concerned with the correct accessories and choice of color. |

And? How does that mean it costs less to produce? I have no clue, but I'm thinking the cost of materials has gone way up.
I know in the construction world, material costs keep rising every year, even though there are new and better methods of building coming it doesn't mean a savings in cost of building.

back in the day, all that shit was done by hand, someone carving it into a metal mold and hopefully getting it right, today with computers and robotics producing the mold, its a one time thing with higher accuracy to detail.
If Hasbro controls every level of production using computers and robotics it 'should' be cheaper to produce.

Should and Are, two very different things.
It could very well be that the production of the figures is cheaper. But there are alot of other factors that go into the price: shipping, packaging, overhead costs, etc.. Shipping, without a doubt, is much more costly then it was.

When I read the title all I could picture was a stack of 100s, astro glide, and a pigs rear . At least that is what I see. Most of the reissue 25th i see is scrap. Really bad paint on over half the figures I have seen lately. I almost bought a second Storm Shadow for my sons ninja army when I noticed the arms looked to be long sleeved due to crappy paint. Bad eyes and poorly painted or non painted joints, no thanks I will just give my money to the dark one ( evilbay) for the originals.

At work, we pay about $2,000 for the tooling on a mold for plastic game parts. The sculpting is another charge (less than $2,000, but not insignificant) and sometimes it takes several revisions before we get what we want.
Molds aren't as expensive as they once were, but there is a cost. |
