BLACK FRIDAY has started with a Blast....
Shoppers hurt in Black Friday pepper spray incident CTVNews.ca Date: Fri. Nov. 25 2011 8:18 AM ET It truly was a black Friday for about 20 people who were injured in Los Angeles by a woman blasting pepper spray into a crowd of shoppers competing for prized merchandise. That was just one incident on the day after American Thanksgiving when many stores stay open all night or open their doors in the pre-dawn hours to offer huge discounts for bargain-hunting shoppers. The incident at the L.A. mall took place just after 10:20 p.m. local time Thursday, in a Wal-Mart. At least half of the 20 people injured were hurt not by the pepper spray, but by the chaos in the crowd as people tried to flee, police said. CTV's Merella Fernandez, reporting from Buffalo, N.Y. Friday morning, said there were no reports of violence in that city. However, she said the Walden Galleria mall was bustling with shoppers several hours before the sun came up. "Even as I was checking out of the hotel bright and early this morning there were people coming back with bags full of things from Target," Fenandez told CTV's Canada AM. "At 5 o'clock this morning they had already been shopping and were probably going out for round two or round three." Fernandez said she circled the mall parking lot several times at 5 a.m. before she found a parking spot in the sea of cars -- many with Ontario plates. "The crowds are definitely out. Macy's has been open since midnight and one of the sales ladies told me it's been busy since they opened." Black Friday has traditionally been an American phenomenon, with retailers boosting pre-Christmas shopping with discounts of 40, 50 and even 70 per cent off on everything from clothing to electronics. This year, however, many Canadian retailers are attempting to cash in on the trend in an effort to keep Canadians shopping at home, rather than across the border. Sally Ritchie, spokesperson for the Retail Council of Canada, said many stores are offering large discounts, scratch-and-save deals and longer hours in order to compete. But with the loonie performing well against the greenback, and U.S. retailers scrambling to boost sales amid the struggling American economy, it may be difficult to convince shoppers to stay home. A Bank of Montreal survey suggests 18 per cent of Canadians plan to shop in the U.S. this holiday season, well above last year. Fernandez said Canadians who are planning to head south should get an early start. By 5:30 a.m. ET some store sections were already picked over, she said.
