Toybiz was going to produce one for its original line of action figures for "Fellowship of the Ring." There are prototype pics on the internet. It was much, much smaller, maybe a little bigger than Sauron but not as tall as Treebeard. However, it got cancelled, and the rumor is that Wal-Mart did it because they were offended by the "demon" look of it and said they wouldn't order it (which honestly doesn't make any sense as Wal-Mart didn't really sell much LOTR stuff anyway). The Balrog remained #1 on the fanboy lists of what they most wanted to be produced all through the years the LOTR films and related merchandise were released. The closest we got was an "environment" with a partial Balrog in the 2" scale Armies of Middle Earth series. They couldn't make a full one because the license specified their action figures couldn't be more than so many inches tall. The NECA Balrog was one of the last things released after the LOTR hype had died down following "Return of the King." You may remember NECA also made a giant Aragorn, Legolas and Gandalf the Grey in this scale that were released to retail. The Balrog, however, never was, internet only, and did not have "packaging" per se. It just came in a brown mailing box. It's an awesome toy but it has its disadvantages. It is very top-heavy, the joints get loose very quickly, and these factors make it difficult to display on any surface other than the floor. You have to lean it against something or it falls over, and let me tell you, you do not want it falling over because it weighs a ton.

BFJ I must say I am a bit envious of your LOTR Stuff. I would love to have that NECA Balrog to display along with my other LOTR stuff. Wish I had more space for my Armies of Middle Earth stuff. That was really one of my favorite lines due to the scale. I hav a good bit that I would love to display as one ginormous battle scene.
And the first Hobbit movie is slated for Dec 2011, man I cannot wait... |

Slim to none, and slim just left the building. I think there are too many stories in the Silmarillion to make a good flowing movie. I would like to see 'The Children of Hurin' on the big screen though. Talk about a great tragedy. |

The Cubs will win a World Series before this happens. The Silmarillion probably doesn't have enough of a linear story to it to make it filmable (or even watchable).

I always quite enjoyed the book myself, but you may have a point. TV miniseries might work better though... (Sorry, JRR nut here) |
