Hello everyone. I hope things around here have been going well, I'm really sorry that I could not be around for the last game. My father had been in the hospital with a broken hip and had to have surgery on it. We were away from our home and in the hospital from March 29th all the way until today, which we finally returned home. It's been a really long month for my family and I, with my dad breaking his hip, having to go through the surgery, being sent to a nursing home/rehabilitation facility for what was supposed to be his rehab time, only to get really severely sick two days after being sent to the facility. Turns out the nursing home had neglected to give my dad the breathing treatments that he HAD to have for his lungs, since he has chronic COPD lung disease, asthma, bronchitis, etc. The neglect to give him his breathing medicine threw him into an Acute Respiratory Distress, where his lungs were going through withdrawals by not having the medicine he had been taking for 1-2 years, every single day. This resulted in him being sent back to the hospital we had been discharged from just two days prior and admitted back in, this time into the ICU unit. While he was in there, my dad was having a really hard time breathing on his own, and he ultimately had to be put on a respirator. They kept on trying to take him off of it after some time, but they were unable to for a long period of time, like for an hour or so he was only able to breathe on his own. From there, the decision was made to transfer him to another hospital, out of our hometown, that could better treat him and would be better able to help him get off the respirator. After he was transferred to the new hospital, the lung specialist there said that she thought they could get him off the respirator without having to put in the tube in his neck to breathe with, and that they would try about a week.
It's at this point my story takes a turn for the absolute worst. During my dad's time at the new hospital, it was discovered that he had come down with a really severe infection, and from that point on his condition began to deteriorate. We were told his kidneys were starting to shut down and his blood pressure was starting to drop to dangerously low amounts. Often, the bottom part of his blood pressure, the Diastolic pressure, was zero. As a result, the focus switched from trying to get him off the respirator to trying to cure him from this infection. Unfortunately, as we would soon learn, the infection was too severe, and three days ago, at around 1:00 am CDT, my dad passed away. The infection that ultimately caused his death was really severe, called Sepsis. It is an infection that affects the full body and can be very hard to get rid of in people who are my dad's age and have kidney and other organ problems like he did. Specifically, my dad was in the stage of it referred to "Septic Shock", which is the most severe stage of Sepsis. Septic Shock is where continuous IV treatment of medicine has no effect on the infection, and it gets progressively worse from there. When I researched the condition, it said that people in my dad's shape who fall into Septic Shock only have a 20% chance to get over the infection. So it is with deep regret to say that after all of the hardship my family and I went through this past month, that my dad did not get to return home with us when we were let out of the hospital down there today; my mom had been admitted into the hospital herself for the last few days of his life with some slight heart attack symptoms. She's doing better now, but she has to have some home health rehab and has to walk on a walker now. We have to start planning for my dad's funeral, and we have family from out of state coming in to help with the arrangements. So that, is where I've been for the past month, since the 29th of March, all the way until today, in and out of hospitals supporting my family while my dad fought for his life, regrettably with a negative result. I'm alright for the most part emotionally, I had a couple episodes of grieving while I was in the hospital with him; the night he died, because I was with him by myself in his room for the last hour of his life, and was there to say my goodbyes when they took him off the respirator for the last time and did the EKG on his heart to confirm his death. Then, the next night, I was out in the parking lot of the hospital, getting something out of our car and I started thinking about him and just broke down into tears out there. Other than those two episodes, I've handled my emotions fairly well, thanks to the outpouring of support I've gotten from all my friends, and the understanding that my dad is in a better place and isn't suffering anymore. We plan on making his funeral arrangements within the next day or so, and after it is over and he is buried, I'll be ready to return to more of my normal activities, as in work and whatnot. I saw that you all won the game again last round, and I want to congratulate the team for winning again and to say that I'm really sorry I was not able to play with you all last time. I just had too much going on at the moment when the game started to be able to focus on it. However when the next game starts, I'd be happy and ready to fight alongside you all once again, and I look forward to returning to the team when the game starts. I hope everyone has been well and I look forward to seeing you all in the game once again next round. Take care all, Yo Joe! |
