I can't quite understand why DH built such a big roster over here though when Cobra only has about 13 confirmed for the game.

It is odd considering how friendly their leader is.

1) Because how many players Cobra has on their team should have no impact on how many are on our team. The entire reason that the game was split to have Special Ops as part of it was for the precise reason that the teams no longer had to be of equal numbers. In the inception of the game, for the first several months, the team with more players won every game except one. Then it was required teams had to have equal numbers to play, and that meant that either people had to switch teams to even things out, leading to dissatisfaction and a lot of people leaving, drones had to be issued (and we know how everone loves those), games had to be delayed days at a time to even out numbers, or people had to sit out games or be rotated in and out mid game. None of those are good options. So Cla made the decision to split the game into Strike and Ops so only one part of the teams went head to head, and the numbers beyond 15 didn't have to be equal. There were perhaps other mechanisms to do the same thing, but he felt that was best of the available options. Therefore, no team is now beholden by the others to dictate their numbers. Cobra and the Grenadiers certainly never hesitated to recruit the last couple years to the point where they outnumbered the Joes, sometimes by a factor of 2-to-1. And yet somehow they didn't feel guilt about that situation. Nor should we now. 2) Because there's no earthly reason why Cobra should only have 13 players on their team. The last six games we've played, Cobra has pretty consistently hovered around 20 players, and that's with some people coming, and others coming back. If they actually had all the players who have played since January on the team at once they'd pretty much be at 30 right now as well. I understand that not every person can play every game. But over half a team up and disappearing? That's not because they aren't available, that's because there's no one over on Cobra spending the time to get in contact with them and get them willing to play. Even if somehow that many people aren't around, all it takes is a few PMs around the tank to find new players. But no one over there is taking the time to do that. And they wouldn't have to look very far. Since January THREE different tankers have posted in either the Cobra or IG thread expressing interest in signing up. All three still post on the tank at least every other day, and given that none of them are on the Cobra roster, I doubt that anyone there even noticed those posts, let alone followed up on them. 3) Because the roster is not about one game, its about the next several. As I just said above, not every player can play every game. But if you look at the Joe Roster, every player other than Atomsmasher is signed up for tomorrow. That's not going to last. People are going to take vacation. People are going to have family obligations. People are going to need a couple months off from the nightly grind. When that happens, do we want to be scrambling to find enough people to play and having those people feel bad for not being around to help? I don't. I want to be able to say "ok, have a good month off, I'll bug you next game" and have other people who can slot into the position without stressing myself or whoever else is leading, and without guilting players who aren't available. 4) Because our roster was sadly lacking diversity. If you look at where this team would be with just the players we had in January now, you'd see a list of 17 players. 9 of them will be level 7+ with custom classes by the end of the summer. Another 3 would be level 6, and the rest would be scattered. That leaves very few options for figuring out where to put people on the roster to balance the bonuses. If you look at the players that the team has hunted down to re-recruit or recruit fresh, you'll see that they span the rank structure from top to bottom, from a level 6 to several level 3s and 4s, to a handful of level 0s to 2s. That gives us diversity now to put different players into different roles each game (unless they have their custom class). The way we were, people got stuck playing the same thing over, and over and over again. And some people were OK with that. Others would have preferred some variety. This gives us the option to do either without being constrained. If there's a certain class that needs a particular rank, there's more than one guy who can fill that role. 5) Because old soldiers don't die, they fade away. If you look at Cla's experience list, you'll notice there are two points when most people leave the game. When they are level 2 or lower, or when they are level 5 or 6. Those that leave early simply find that they don't enjoy the game as much as they though they would, but those who retire at later classes have had a lot of fun with the game, but have become tired, or left collecting, or are just worn out from the game. And if you look at the games played by our core players, that's going to start happening eventually to our core of veterans as well. Even as it is, most of our high level players no longer stop by the game thread to say hi as often as they once did. In a few games, I hope they'll still be here as most have become good friends of mine, but what if they don't? Who steps in to fill those holes? We have to be prepared for that possibility that people will leave, and so we need people coming up from lower ranks to take those high level spots in time. I'd be happy if we eventually wound up with a team of 30 guys who were level7s. But there isn't the slightest chance that will ever happen. 6) Because I for one am sick of losing. There have been 74 games played on the tank. The Joes have won 26.5 of those. That doesn't seem too bad right? Well that winds up being 37% of the games we've played, compared to Cobra's 43% or the Grenadier's 54%. We're better than the combined Merc/SMF record of 31%, but as one of the three main teams, we're by a large margin the worst. Of those 26.5 wins, 14 came in two periods Summer 09 to Spring 10, and 2014. Another 8 came in Summer 08. Back when the game was in its infancy. So, between early 2010 and 2014, we won 4.5 games of 33 over a period of 4 years. That's embarrassing. Did you see anyone on Cobra, or the Iron Grenadiers, or the Mercenaries, ALL of whom won more games in that time span, ever say anything about cutting their roster down or helping the Joes get back on their feet? No. All we got was ridicule and mockery. I for one won't stand for that any longer. 7) Because the last 5 games were competitive, and this one SHOULD have been to. All five ops games have come down to a difference of two or fewer posts. Three of five Strike games have been a difference of three player posts. Only two Strike victories have been fairly equivocal. That's more competitive than this game has been in years. Cobra was doing very well with the players they had, and should continue to do so once they all come out to battle. 8) Because the problem is not our fault, nor our job to fix. The problem is not that we've taken time to build up our roster and our team organization. The problem is that the other team has had no impetus to do anything. And why is that our job to remedy? When the Joe team has had problems, who has stepped in to help us? I direct anyone interested to THIS THREAD beginning on that page. The Joes were losing by 80some points at that time, and Cobra was out-hitting us by 24 points every day, continuing to widen that lead. Take a look at how much sympathy our team received from Cobra. I'll give you the summary version - essentially zero (except from one who suggested a draft to even things out). And that was when the problem was 50% the Joes' fault, and 50% due to an unforseen unfairness in rank structure during that game. This time, the problem is 100% the ability to "get out the vote" of each team. THAT's why I built up the roster like I did, and I feel no problem with having done so. I'm fully open to hearing any counterpoint to anything I said, or any argument that I may have missed. But I think its unlikely that one can be made. Prove me wrong. |
