Scary fact - that's not terribly unusual for medical students and residents on Surgery (let alone Neurosurgery which is generally the most intense subspecialty).
48 hour shifts are still quite the reality here without sleep. And the residents are the ones who will be doing most of the operating on patients. You get used to it. (sorta) Life is much better once you're "staff". It only takes 10 years to get there. |

That sounds insane to me. I couldn't do that at all. I enjoy sleeping in too much.

OH that reminds me,
you know how wierd the zombie viper looks with all that stuff coming out of his back? Yeah....we actually do that for spinal surgery (Yes, that's a screwdriver. How else do you thing we put rods into the spine?) |

That is cool DH. So, a screw driver was used to put the metal plate in my left shoulder and my left leg too I would think.

Assuming that those were for fracture repair (?) that is basically the case.
Orthopaedics lines up the broken ends and reduces the fracture (that is, makes the bone as close to perfect as they can) then puts a metal plate across the break. That plate has holes in it that they drill screws through, first drilling a hole in the bone (literally with a drill) and then screwing bolts into place t hold the plate (type and number vary). That keeps the fracture reduced so that it heals properly. |
