Nah, been done. Let's argue in a way that is expository for the subject to any readers we might have.

I'm well aware of the properties of real-world lasers, I'm just saying something like that seems very impractical as a one-person setup. The amount of power for continuous/repeated use for a military energy weapon like his rifle strikes me as being more than one man can carry unless you're Master Chief or post-Lazarus Project Commander Shepard.
I've never covered this aspect of physics, but based off general electromagnetic induction, for a mil-grade laser, you'd need a generator roughly 3/4 the size as the trooper. Not impossible, but it would likely require two guys. Mind you, 20 years from now? a backpack rig is possible. Quote:
There are three recorded sniper kills of 1.5 miles or greater (one Brit and two Canadians BTW). 2.5 miles with a laser rifle? perfectly feesable. EDIT: for those wondering, it takes over 4 seconds for the bullet to traverse 1.5 miles. Quote:
Like happens to all things Joe, we're having a discussion about the real world application and capabilities of a little plastic gun held by a little plastic man, dreamed up in an office in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, by a group of people whose sole job is to create ideas for toys.
You know, now that I say it out loud, it sounds pretty ridiculous. |

One thing that people are also forgetting about Lasers and Sci-Fi's use on the team is, that he can put that laser on a target from 2.5 miles away. Some jet 50 miles away drops a laser guided munition. The missile flys into target AO, finds the laser designator.. locks on. Follows Sci-Fi's beam in and.... BOOM. You've just applied precision pin point strike to a target in the field.
Not all lasers are Zappy Burn. Some are just pointers for the bigger BOOM.

Heres an interesting thing for calculating LOS. Personally I think the only way Sci-Fi could hit something at maximum range of his eye site at ground level. Is if his weapon is set up like a sniper, in a very stable position. And at 100 miles He would have to be at an elevation just under 10,000 ft to even be able to see it. Curvature of the Earth is the biggest hindrance, but the higher you go the more wind is buffeting you. So its kinda ridiculous all together. In the Renegades verse everyone has lasers so he doesn't necessarily have to fill a sniper role. He can just be a grunt like the others. Not to mention lasers dissipate over distance so the whole thing is kinda ridiculous s = sqrt(2rh+h^2) s = line of sight distance r = radius of sphere (Earth = ~3959mi) h = height viewed from (altitude) All have the same units... so make sure you use it correctly. A few examples...with rough ideas of what might be there. 5.5ft: 2.9mi (Typical person's height to eyeballs) 2000ft: 54.8mi (General aviation aircraft / tall tower) 10000ft: 122.5mi (Mountain) 37000ft: 235.7mi (Airliner) 60000ft: 300.2mi (Concorde) 100000ft: 387.7mi (SR-71) 250000ft: 614.1mi (X-15) 500000ft: 871.1mi 1000000ft: 1239.1mi (Space Shuttle)

5.5ft: 2.9mi (Typical person's height to eyeballs) I tend to agree. He'd have to be more or less at a normal level (at most within 3-5 floors of ground under 98% of circumstances). But that still gives him a pretty massive range if he's set up to snipe things. almost 3 miles? Good luck seeing that coming. And as pepsi said. Non-mil grade lasers can be used to target other things too. As a sniper-style soldier, its actually extremely feasable. |
