Thanks for all the responses, guys!

I think the IDW comics (and some of the old ARAH comics from back in the day, including Special Missions) are the closest we'll come to something like this. That isn't to say it isn't a whole lot fun to think about!
The HBO Game of Thrones series is able to juggle a large varied cast, including many characters who are fairly deep/complex. I don't think it's easy to combine the gritty realistic stuff with the wacky colorful stuff, but the IDW Cobra series did wonders with some of the crazy old Cobras. I know I'd love to see a show that focused on a plausible military special operations force on a mission by mission (rather than character by character) basis, and wove in a little of the Cobra High command stuff without that being the focus of the show. I think a plot based tactical team shooter could also be a good way to give G.I.Joe a modern adult feel. Quote:
Well I suppose even if they did it would be hard to please most of the fans. Some of us want ninjas, some of us want lasers, some of us want gritty military stuff, some of us want a shadowy espionage thing. Still lots of fun to thik about of course. I'm just imagining real life size HISS tanks (that looks like HISS tanks) rumbling around on squealing tracks.

I believe there's a market for a G.I Joe TV series. There are plenty of military themed/criminal investigation shows that have been successful over the years. The elements of successful shows like, 24, JAG, NCIS, The X Files, The A Team, M.A.S.H. etc.,etc. are all there. G.I. Joe is much deeper than just troops in the field. Chuckles can handle the C.I.A. angle. The Joes have several members to handle the C.I.D./ intelligence angle. Cobra has plenty of depth, with extensive enterprises and Arbco industries to handle the "sci-fi"/X files angle; plus all the subteams bring into play the criminal element with the headhunters, the international with the red shadows, arashikage, and South American characters. The Crimson Guard could handle the "Boiler Room/Wall Street angle. Even the "Sons of Anarchy" angle can be played out with the drednoks. Cobra can also supply "The Walking Dead" angle with its' zombie vipers. There is just so much in G.I. Joe, that IMO, a live action TV series would be a better platform than a movie.

Most people seemed to like the Cobra comics from IDW more than the G.I. Joe or SE books. That would mean a show more like Nikita than The Unit would be the way to go. The name G.I. Joe carries too much baggage to be successful week to week as an adult show. The fanboys can't agree about what G.I. Joe should be. The general public thinks it's a kiddie property. I doubt Hasbro will make collectors toys for an adult series. I have yet to see a successful toy line in support of any of the popular geek shows on air. The shows that do get toys follow the McFarlane toys 6" statue model. If Game of Thrones spawns a successful toy line, then Hasbro may back an adult show.
I also agree that the name "G.I. Joe" carries too much baggage, as the general public sees it as a toy line or cheesy old cartoon with the "Knowing is half the battle" crap. I'd name the show something totally different and even downplay the name "G.I. Joe" in the series. |
