If I were doing a new GI Joe cartoon I would first consult that guy who drew all those pics of Scarlett being dumped in mud.

Well I liked the original cartoon for what it was. Still going back and watching the old episodes and I enjoy them.
Overall though, for marching in a new era of Joe toons, well I think the way that DC and Marvel are going currently with the direct to DVD by Lionsgate or whoever would be a great way to bring it back. Make them PG13, R might be pushing it really far, but gritty PG13 and put them out as hour or two hour long episodes on DVD. I would like to see the no name cobra troopers, vipers, etc get killed. I want to see Joes get seriously hurt and maybe die if they aren't really in the new continuum. Possibly kill civilians...make Cobra a real B.A. terrorist organization. When Marvel and DC first started their new animation stuff it seemed like it took forever in between the 1st one and their next one. Now they seem to be pumping them out pretty regularly. I would rather have this than the 5 min webisodes that we've been hearing about for Resolute. |

I don't think it needs to be extremely violent. I don't see the need for death and destruction. I mean, it could be brought back and function on a Brave and the Bold or Clone Wars element. The violence is there but it's not in the fore front. Make it a bit darker (to appeal to a wider audience) and for the love of god drop the "yo joe" and "cobra" cheese factor.

I'd like a combination of the above... a rated R, animated (Akira/Ghost in the Shell etc), revamp of the best story arc's from both the cartoon, and comics. One hour installments, twice a month, for a three year run. George RR Martin would write it.
I'd include the following characters: Joes: Ace, Beachhead, Breaker, Brekhov, Clutch, Colson, Cover-Girl, Daina, Doc, Dragonski, Duke, Falcon, Flagg, Flint, G.I.Jane, Gorky, Grunt, Gung-Ho, Hawk, Horror Show, Jinx, Lady Jaye, Misha, Roadblock, Rock'N'Roll, Scarlett, Shipwreck, Shrage, Slaughter, Snake-Eyes, Spirit, Stalker, Stormavik, Torpedo, Tunnel Rat, and Wild Bill. Plus: Green Shirt Troopers, Civilian workers, and I'd organize the Steel Brigade as an elite Green shirt detachment, acting as vehicle operators, engineers, and MP's. Cobras: Baroness, Billy, Buzzer, Cobra Commanders (Cobra-La=the sycophantic coward , Human=the ruthless dictator, and Fred VII=the naive genius), Destro, Dr. Mindbender, Firefly, Golobulus, Major Bludd, Nemesis Enforcer, Overkill (Cybernetically enhanced SAW-Viper that mowed down the Joes), Overlord, Pythona, Ripper, Road Pig (split personality), Serpentor, Storm Shadow, Tomax, Torch, Xamot, Zarana, and Zartan. Plus: Crimson Guards (regular, and elite Fred's), Red Ninjas, Officers, Royal Guards, Medi-Vipers, AVACs, Tank Commanders, Air-Vipers, Jetpack Troopers, Techno-Vipers, Tele-Vipers, Snow Serpents, Eels, Vipers, Troopers, BATs, civilian workers, and cobra-la citizens. Misc: Blind Master, Hard Master, Kwinn, Soft Master, and Wade Collins. For vehicles, and equipment I'd go with modern, and prototype gear, but include custom bikes for the Noks, Abrams, M2/M3 Bradleys, Apaches, Falcons, Little Birds, Cobras, Hornets, Pavehawks, Humvees, Ranger Bikes, Lavs, M777s, Strykers, Buggys, Patrol Boats, Zodiacs etc etc.. for both sides, and the following original's as well: Golobulus's Seed Chariot, Serpentor's Air Chariot, M.A.S.S. Device, Weather Dominator, Brainwave Scanner, Flight Pods, S.N.A.K.E. armor for Techno-Vipers, Night Ravens, Firebats, H.I.S.S. Tanks, ASPs, Morays, Sting Raiders, Chameleons, Ghost Hawks, Flak Canons, Whirlwinds, Armadillos, and PAC/RATs

Assuming I could do what I want with zero executive meddling...
No brainer for this one. I'd get either Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell movies and TV, Blood: The Last Vampire, Blood +, etc) or Gonzo (don't blame them for Sigma 6, they also did Samurai 7) for the animation and maybe ZRO Limit (Bebop, Bleach, Trigun) to handle the voices. I'd have Larry Hama as a writer, or at least a creative consultant and it would be aimed at a mixed audience. Colorful characters and flashy battles for the younguns, but also the clever dialogue and characterization of the old cartoon. No shrink rays or giant animals (unless it was an experiment of Mindbender gone ary, hillarity ensues), but plenty of grand schemes and doomsday devices. Now here's the big one. Death. Faceless mooks are probably a safge target, with the occasional greenshirt casualty. Major characters would probably have plot armor, unless it was a season finally and we really want to show that they mean business. You don't need to have an "anyone can die" mandate to create drama. I remember it took JMS (yes, that JMS) two seasons to kill a major character on Captain Power, but damnit, I only saw it once and I remember it to this day. |

Was 1983 the first mini series? I don't remember but in 1983 I was still really into it. I loved the comic in the beginning but as the years went on they just started introducing too many new characters and dropping the old one's (same thing happened in the cartoon)
As a fan I went ga ga for new figures but replacing Flash, Breaker, Grunt and Gung Ho with characters like Sci-Fi, Dial tone, Footloose and Leatherneck eventually drove me away too.

In all seriousness I would make sure it's something my kids could watch. My 3 yr old and 6 yr old love the old cartoons so much. They are watching the Best of the 80s dvd right now.
