The spring loaded missile launcher that came with the Resolute 5-pack is actually one of the best ones Hasbro has made.

I was born in 82, and had some earlier year Joes from 85-87 or so, then got into Joe again towards 89/90...
As a kid, I loved anything that was Joe, no matter what it was. It didn't matter if it was polka-dotted or completely ridiculous, I loved anything new I could get my hands on, but even I had limits.
I didn't so much mind the designs and neon colors on the figures, but the neon guns and swords bothered the shit out of me as a kid. Also, I put up with Eco-soldiers, but when GI Joe turned into Space Monsters, I gave it up. I officially grew out of toys a few years later, until college brought me back into it as a full-fledged nerd.
Spring-loaded weapons, if the figures can hold them and stand up, are in the realm of tolerable... Oversized weapons drove me nuts. On vehicles they weren't as obnoxious... In fact, I loved items like the General's big-ass mortar cannon, and the Badger. They seem to blend in a little better on vehicles, due to the scale working better. A vehicle won't topple over from the weight of a spring-loaded weapon. The weapons that drove me nuts were water-squirting ones, or those bigass Nerf/foam-launchers... I had one, and a douchebag friend stomped on the bellows, and it no longer works. They were semi-fun to shoot, but you couldn't aim for shit, and they launched too far and could get lost.
I actually think the spring-loaded vehicle weapons hold the missiles better than the ones where the missiles just hung on to pegs, because they sort of snapped in place instead of falling off and getting lost. As for figures, I don't see the need for missiles in the first place, even like with Major Bludd or Bazooka. I pretended as a kid that missiles came out, the same as I pretended that bullets came out of the guns. That 25th Bludd's missiles are terrible... easy to lose, and impossible to find.
I enjoyed spring-loaded weapons as a kid, and I didn't mind the neon colors. I also loved the DiC cartoons. I also didn't own many of the 82-88 figures, or get to watch as much of the Sunbow cartoon as I'd like. I will say as an adult, I much prefer the earlier figures and the Sunbow series, and think the neon is tacky and ridiculous. I specifically want the 25th figures of the earlier guys that I never had, because I always wanted them and never had them. They were on the reruns of the Sunbow episodes, but not in stores anymore, thus I never had them. Now's my chance to get them, plus they're in their best form ever.
I don't think kids today will enjoy the exact same stuff we did as a kid... Times are different, and I don't know if kids actually play with action figures as much as we did as a child. I do wish that we'd had the tooling capabilities that they do now when I was a child, because I think it goes wasted on a lot of kids. But, at the end of the day, these are toys, designed for kids, and I think it's silly for us as adults to get in a tizzy about toys in general. Especially the movie figures, which are for children. I'll agree that the 25th line is for adults, and I've done my share of griping. But the movie line sucks for me, as I'm not into it. But I'm also not the target audience.
From an art direction and design perspective though (and yes, I'm a professional designer and feel confident in giving my opinion on this) I think the movie designs are predominantly garbage.

I always use the spring loaded weapons for custom and replacement pieces. If the weapon has a missile tip I cut the part that goes in the barrel off at the base of the missile. Then add the missile to a stack of munitions or use it to replace a lost missile on a vehicle. I've gotten some sweet looking diorama parts from them. If its one of those missiles that is an energy blast I'll use it for customs. Got some good Iron Man repulser blasts, Human torch fireballs, and lightning effects out of spring loaded missiles in the past.
If the launcher looks good I'll cap the launch barrel and use it as a normal weapon for display or make something else out of it.
