Since the 1980s was certainly an inaugural and seminal decade for 3 3/4" GI Joes, I was wondering what year people thought was the most exciting in terms of characters and vehicles.
It was a hard choice between 1985 and 1986, but I decided that 1985 was probably the point at which GI Joes and vehicles still reflected a realistic military while branching out into some creative territory with the likes of Barbecue and Airtight. During this year we got Snake-Eyes (v2), which I still think is the best version ever made, and we also got Flint, who became a likable stand-in leader for the aging Duke. On top of that we got the Dreadnoks, Dusty, Eels and Snow Serpents. Not to mention the twins and crimson guard--all iconic figures to date. Not necessarily the best decade for vehicles but damn close. The snowcat and Moray are all-time favorites, and the AWE and Mauler are solid assualt vehicles as well. And who can forget the largest, most ambitious toy made to date: the USS Flagg. It was the BMF of the 80s, and I don't know if that kind of ambition will ever be revisited. So there's my pick, what's yours?

I think 1982 is the peak year for me. Everything that came out the first year was awesome and I remember Mom's networking together to find the elusive Cobra trooper and Officer for their kids

87. It was the 2nd year that NES came out meaning lots of kids now had it which really became the video game boom.
Action figures started declining. Also, that was the year the neon and space started showing up, making kids go meh. |

86 Brought some really cool vehicles into the joe universe. Plus we had the dome and some kick ass figs. This was the last year I bought joes.

'85 you could still get all the '84 stuff. And if lucky could still find '83 figures on the shelves. Not to mention we still had the Skystriker, Mauler, Whale and Flagg at that point. '86 would be a close second with the Terror Drome, Night Raven and many new likable figures like the BAT and Viper.

1983.
Gung Ho, Airborne, Snow Job, Destro, Major Bludd, and Duke. Swivel arm battle grip. Dragonfly, Skystriker, and the Wolverine. 1983 was THE year for GI Joe. |
