GI Joe, at its pinnacle, was the top action figure. Everybody was trying to be Joe. When Joe tried to be everybody else, it failed, and faded, and never recovered. Joe began to recover when it rediscovered its roots with its core collectors (all grown up now). Where will it go from here?

Spring loaded weapons won't bring down the GI JOE line. Fruity colored figures and vehicles did that in the 1990s. If Hasbro sticks to dark colors, and good sculpting, intrest may vary, but I think the line will continue.
Not all the movie toys look bad, and the Resolute stuff ie pretty great! Pluss Hasbro claims that the Anniversary lin will continue after the Live action movie. If this is true, I think the future lokks pretty good!
PLease! I need your help to find; LOOSE:
1. Comic Pack October Guard Figures.
2. 1987 Cobra Maggot
3. Cobra Adder
4. Cobra Imp
5. Cobra Bunker parts or complete
6. Cobra Rifle Range parts or complete
7. Loose Pit Commandos, complete or not
8. Loose 25th greenshirts, complete or not

i stopped collecting in 88, and only picked up 2 figures in 89 because the toys had started getting TOO sci fi for my taste. even as a kid, figures with "laser-proof armor" seemed like a stupid concept. so i never really paid attention to the line after that....
now, over the years i have seem a few of the crazy older figures, but i never really LOOKED at the the joe line from 90-94. not until last night.... i hadn't even HEARD of Mega Marines or Dino Hunters, and i had NO idea actually of the total and complete ridiculousness that was Star Brigade. the whole last few years of the RAH line were just filled with repaints, parts swapping and neon colors. the head sculpts were really nice, but the designs were horrendous....and the concepts were insane. no wonder kids got bored with the Joe line.
GrapeSoda: i'm not procrastinating....i'm just lazy. oh...wait....

There was alot of great stuff near the end! I loved the DEF, The Gliders, Battle Copters and quite a few single carded figures. I think Hasbro repainting and realesing figures from the previous year hurt them more than missle launchers. That and they were going to many ways with the line and lost focus.

You know, we all talk about "kids getting bored" with G.I. Joe, and how they supposedly didn't like the neon colors, etc... etc...
But the other very simple fact is that the vast majority of the Joe audience did what most ordinary people do and stopped caring about toys as they crept into their teen years.
The "core" audience that had grown up with the cartoon and comics and original 3 3/4" figures simply grew up. Yes, the new "gimmicks" failed to capture new audiences that were more enthralled by TMNT and Power Rangers, X-Men, et al..., but it wasn't as if keeping G.I. Joe strictly "the way it was" would have guaranteed the line's continued success. It almost certainly wouldn't have caused thousands of people who were otherwise inclined not to buy toys as teens/adults to suddenly become toy collectors.
I would bet that even most of us here took a break from Joe Collecting for a few years. I wonder if folks look back without the nostalgia glasses on if they might realize that it wasn't so much the outlandishness of what was coming out, but that they had gotten hooked on other things like cars, the opposite sex, and what have you. It's easy for us to retroactively validate our adult opinions by claiming that was exactly why we stopped buying as children/teens ("I hated all that neon crap and launchers and action features and crappity crap crap!"), when in reality it was probably just the normal process of growing up.
In an ironic mirror of what's happening with the movie line...the kids that'd bought G.I Joe in the early-mid 80's were no longer the target audience...because as far as the retail world was concerned teens and adults just didn't buy toys in any significant numbers (not for themselves, anyway). The "adult collector" was an anomaly, not any sort of lucrative market. Certainly not one the retailers realized existed or would exist at the time.

Gosh, don't let potential issues with oversized spring loaded weapons get you down!
A quick visit to your friendly local "Gun-Runner" can satisfy all of your "realistic & inscale weapon" needs!

Alot of things killed the original line. The crappy movie was a start, and everything that followed killed the GI joe line. Its sad that it got as far as it did. They should have stopped with series 9. That was the last release to have relativily good figures, Bullhorn is by far one of my favorite RAH figs.
But no, they had to go cheese it up for the 90's. When you think about it the 90's killed GI joe. That and the change in a generation, all of us that grew up with joes from the start, did just that we grew up. Joes took a back seat along with our childhood to high school, girls, cars, sports, grades, popularity, etc.
But more than that, just the 90's in general, political correctness, removing play guns from children, barney, better video games, etc.. The result - neon coloring to minimize the reality of selling a toy gun, missle firing objects for the lazy and unimaginative, crappy gimics that stirred away from the military- eco warriors, and ninja force. Hasbro sold out to the times. They tried to please special interest groups, and release kid friendly garbage that wouldn't be confused with a realistic military toy. All because parents started sheltering their kids from reality.
I would hope for this current run to cover atleast all the core characters from the original releases of series 1 thru 9. Obviously theres some characters we could live with out, but if they covered the majority of that, I would be content. As for new content, I'm ok with them doing characters from the original comics, and cartoons, that may have never got the treatment in the orginal line. I still pray for a female cobra soldier. But anything more than that, and i would probably stop collecting it.
