I'd hazard to say comic book figures, Star Wars, Power Rangers and video games had more to do with the line going on hiatus than neon and spring-loaded missile launchers.
I think the major issue with the movie launchers is their absurd size and the fact that we know they won't really "launch". Those of you actively playing with Joes in the 90's will recall just how far some of those launchers would actually shoot. |

Oh, the wit.
I look forward to almost daily "DEATH OF THE LINE!" posts once the movie stuff actually starts appearing on shelves.

Nah, it wasn't the projectial weapons that killed off the line. It was the plain fact that the figures were just lame. I worked at Toys R Us back in 1993/94 and the kids were buying Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles and Batman/X-Men....compared to these figures GI JOE looked silly. Joe ran it's course and just couldn't compete.

Can we get just one "dEth of teH LinE" thread? Merge all the "downfall," "conspiracy theory," "petition," etc. threads all into one big "EPIC FAIL" thread.

We, the folks that post here and the other sites, were the demographic pushing/buying the Joe line. Eventually we grew up and moved onto other things besides toys. The Joe line wasn't attractive to the kids of the next generation. And so it died out. We may hate Sigma Six, but it appealed to the kids it was aimed for. It just didn't have the staying power of the original line. But it was around as long as most toylines are nowadays, 2-3 years tops. The problem is that the Battlecorps stuff was stuck in the middle. Hasbro was trying to cater to two groups. There was us, the fans of the figure style, but we didn't like the "action" gimmicks. And there was the next generation who did like "action" gimmicks but didn't like the smaller scale of the figures. So they got stuck in the middle and lost out and disappeared.

The real sad part about all this is that Hasbro believes (probably accurately) that if the toys don't do something eyecatching like fire whacky neon projectiles at each other, the kids will ignore them. They believe that the kids don't have the imagination that we had to pretend.
Taking my younger siblings, cousins, and their various friends into account, action figures are a way to pass the time at best. Video games, television, and the internet are what my brother spends 90% of his free time on.The ONLY time he plays with action figures is when my mom tells him to take a break from the electronic stuff. It makes me really sad, especially since hes my brother,I mean he really has no imagination... The only chance G.I .Joe has to do well with kids is with a cartoon and a video game. |

Not to quibble, but Kenner was still producing Star Wars figures in 1995 so planning for the relaunch wouldn't have affected Hasbro.
