Always thought Thunderclap was a poor name. It sounds like something you get for not using protection
Always wondered how the Joes' "laser artillery" would actually work. How do you get indirect fire effects from a laser weapon (when the coherent light travels in a straight line, rendering it useless as an indirect fire weapon). How would they "bend" the beam so that it would travel towards its target in a parabolic trajectory similar to traditional artillery shells (which is presumably how the HAL works, since even at its lowest angle of elevation, the barrel/projector is still tilted slightly upwards)? My physics is a little rusty... would it be possible to make a laser follow the earth's curvature to an appreciable degree so as to be useful for indirect fire purposes? I know they were just toys and the guys designing them probably had no idea about the physics involved, but man, I could spend days, weeks even, idly speculating on GI Joe "science" |

I don't think any GIJoe Laser artillery weapons are used as indirect fire weapons. I think it is straight as an arrow, extremely accurate and fast. So the HAL is an anti aircraft weapon. The Persuader is anti-tank as is the cannon on the Rolling Thunder. The LAW outpost thing is anti-Tank. But if they miss the target then it's just a light show. However I imagine the targeting software it uses makes it spot on every time.

Would a laser be fast enough to follow a plane? Don't they have to remain steady and constant for awhile in order for the laser to work?
So how would the "laser artillery" follow the vehicles/planes? Automatic targeting systems that once "locked" on automatically turn the turrets and follow the target?

That's how it works with the Abrams so why not with the Persuader? The HAL I think would have to be fast enough. Although they probably only have one of those, but it kicks ass. We have to sort of allow for a certain amount of creative license with what these things can do. In order for them to be useful they must hit a target. But unless they fire photon torpedoes, its a straight precise weapon IMO. |

Then what's the point of the gunner in the Persuader? The gunner finds the target, locks it on, and then sits back for the "ride" as the turret swivels back and forth tracking the target?

Well you know in an Abrams the gun stays locked on a target so it can fire while moving. So the turret is continually moving in relation to the target regardless of what the tank is doing.
On the Persuader the Gunner gets to fire the gun and he has to pick the targets. Plus he gets the small gun on top to fire on close targets. Although who fires the Missles? Backstop? |

Adding Blocker to Armor.
Going to add Armadillos. Also going to add VAMPs towing the SLAMs, HALs, MMSs & Whirlwinds. Trying to figure out how many to use.... Last edited by Darkhawk75; 06-10-2009 at 01:14 PM.. |

I love Armadillos. I think that using 'em to tow things severely limits 'em. The great thing about 'Dillos is their speed and manuveruability and the ability to take a hit and to dish it out. Being a towing vehicle gets in the way.
VAMPS make great tow vehicles. Compared to AWE Strikers, they aren't the fastest of best multi-environment jeeps.

I'm sorry I meant Armadillos on there own. And VAMPs as towing vehicles. Fixed the previous post.
