So, I was looking at the thread about the Hall of Heroes being in stock at BBTS, and noticed the 6 out of 10 were Cobras. This got me to thinking that it seems that most of the more popular characters are bad guys. This is true even in my own collection -- I like Firefly, and Cobra's troop builders are so much more interesting than the Green shirts. Even in my Star Wars collection, I like Boba Fett and the biker scouts better than any other characters.
I consider myself a good person who champions honesty and justice, as I would like to think that most of us are. And in real life I wouldn't think that Firefly's actions were cool. So what is the draw towards the "bad guys"? I think for me, it is that they are overall a little more cool than the good guys, action-figure wise. I mean, Boba Fett had the jet pack. How cool is that? Firefly was the first action figure I remember to come with a walkie-talkie. What 9 year old doesn't like a walkie-talkie? Anyway, just some random thoughts.

Besides troop building, i always thought of it as the good guys were outnumbered but accomplished their mission regardless

I'm in the minority that I think (most of) the Cobra's aren't that cool looking. Troopers are kind of generic and plain. Never have been a big fan of the Viper (and it's only the helmet, I love the look of the rest of the figure).
But it usually ends up being that people think bad guys are cool. It's usually that way in all genres/types of media (books, movies, cartoons, toys, tv, etc..). It's a fantasy thing. In real life, the people that do bad things are assholes and deserve what they get. In fantasy, they're made to appear cool and you can root for them without feeling bad.

I wouldn't say the Germans looked cooler. Those spiked-top helmets were pretty corny.

You're the one that brought Germans up in mention with "bad guys". And the last place you could say any Germans came close to being the "bad guys" was in WW2 (And that's only in the point of view of the Allies and that "side" of the war. Pretty sure the Axis saw us as the bad guys).
