I grew up around toys(my dad being a collector), so its sort of apart of me. Nowadays, I enjoy the thrill of the hunt. I also enjoy collecting/displaying them. I just plain like toys!

for me, we moved around a lot as a kid and i didn't have that many friends from moving state to state. i would get a lot of starwars figures when i was really young.....but by the time RAH came out, anything i got was out of my own pocket. odd jobs. skeptical child labor. whatever i could do to earn money to buy records and joes.
now that i'm older, i can say that i suffer from an arrested development. where my mind satisfies this NEED to go out and buy a JOE (although, i couldn't justify dropping $15 US on S6....YEESH!). The excitement of seeing the first Zartan in target.....or trading an 8 bit NES cartridge of metroid for near mint/complete Doc, Mutt, and Lady Jaye.....it just gets my juices flowing. my brain releases those endorphines and i'm taken to a happy place. where i'm in control, and for that moment i'm a kid again.
on the other side of that coin is the core male hunter/gatherer instinct. while i don't need 2 of every variant...i want all the core figures. and i can't help but wander through the toy aisle everytime i enter a store that carries Joes. to see if the one figure i need is out....
GrapeSoda: i'm not procrastinating....i'm just lazy. oh...wait....

Escapism is a good way to put it. As is nostalgia. In a world of economic decline, war and never ending responsibility (bills, parenthood, job, so on) Toys take me back to a time when I had no responsibility apart from cleaning up said toys. Not only do they make me feel nostalgiac, but they are made to evoke such feelings such as the 25th/Modern Joe line with its excellent updates ot our old favorites.
And they are just flipping cool.
Ultimately, though I love my daughter and wife and appreciate the things I've worked for, I like to remember a more innocent time where the only stress I had was whether or not to have grilled cheese or pizza for lunch. Toys take me there and I keep collecting to hold onto those long gone, but not forgotten years.

I enjoy it. It's one of the very few things that I spend money on that isn't a necessity. If you're looking for any kind of deeper psychological reason, then I couldn't tell you. I do get some unidentifiable satisfaction out of it. It's a part of my childhood - Joes were my favorite, and aside from Legos and Transformers and comic books and cars, I wasn't interested in much else until I got into music.

I think there is a control factor too. I think there is a little megalomaniac in all of us and amassing armies of little soldiers gives us a feeling of power. I like to set my Cobra's up in parade formation and pretend I am the leader of a great empire looking down on my armies as they march to conquer neighboring lands.
I need help don't I?
