I've been on Hiss Tank for about a year and there's a handful of names that I recognize from the Devil's Due, TNI, and Joe Battleline's forums from way back at the beginning of the "New Sculpt" (GvC, ST, VvV, & DTC) & Devil's Due Era. The reason I bring this up is because it seems most of us share, relatively, the same opinions about the current state of G.I.Joe.
I've seen several comments from collectors that say they haven't bought G.I.Joe since the 90's and the 25th brought them back. Some that haven't read a comic since the marvel run, or seen the Spy Troops and Venom vs Valor movies. During the "New Sculpt" era there were some really great characters introduced like Barrel Roll, Blackout, Cross Hair, etc. But we had to endure T-crotches, strangely proportioned figures with odd color schemes and vehicles that had gimmicks and "pre-school" shapes. Devil's Due was responsible for bring G.I.Joe back to comics and they introduced some cool new characters and concepts. They had some great ideas and plot points but fell short on execution. I blame this on "writing for the trade." Comics have to fit in that 4 issue arc to make a trade paper back. Devil's Due's arcs always seems at least one issue short on content. Great build-up but weak climax. Then there was the fateful rush to end RAH to reboot with America's Elite. My questions are: 1) Does it seem that those of us who endured the "New Sculpt" era and know how bad things can be are more excited and generally less critical of the 25th & Movie toys? 2) Does it seem that those of us who endured the Devil's Due run are way more excited and generally less critical of IDW's changes/take on G.I.Joe? Just a topic for a friendly discussion.

I prefer the new sculpt figures. I really like how the characters look. I think that the new stuff is more interesting. I have to say those of us who like the modern era stuff are, for the most part, less critical on the new stuff. I truly believe that the new stuff is better, I just wish there was a decent show to back it up.

I bought new sculpt figures and gave them to my kid. I came back to 25th line to collect them for myself. These are what I remember as a kid and I just can't see the new stuff as GI Joe. The toys during VvV, Spytroops, etc were mostly ridiculous, especially the vehicles. The movie toys are mostly unappealing.

Your age being an interesting perspective on how you perceived the New Sculpt era. Did the New Sculpt era get you into Joes?

As for #1, I have been into Gijoe on and off since 1984. I found so much of the GvC, spytroops, and VvsV stuff unappealing, but even then there were some neat figures and vehicles in there. I actually liked the DTC releases quite a bit. The 25th line is simply amazing and I'm liking the resolute stuff a lot as well. The movie line...not so much. Reminds me more of the GvC,spystroops days.
For #2, I have never been into the comics very much but I like the original marvel run. Havn't been following what their doing now with IDW, but it seems more promising than the DD stuff that came out. |

Actually other than that I've had no problems with them Personally, I wish that most of the JvC/ST/VvV characters were made into 25 style eventually. Barrel Roll, Bombstrike, Blackout, MedAlert, Kamakura, Cross Hair, Dart and a bunch of others were GREAT CHARACTERS, but suffered because of poor sculpting. With slightly different uniforms and better colour schemes in 25th style they could easily stand alongside Beachhead, Flint and teh rest of the gang. |

I guess. Sometimes you just have to play the cards your dealt, or fold. Some battles just ain't worth fighting.

I've been around since the New Sculpt stuff came out. Finding the first wave at Walmart was actually what brought me back to GI Joe. I enjoyed most of the GI Joe vs Cobra stuff, but lost interest somewhere between Spy Troops and VvV.
This led to collecting all the vintage stuff I never had as a kid, and turned into a full blown vintage addiction. I've since sold all of my New Sculpt stuff, and concentrate mainly on vintage, even though I've bought most of the 25th Anniversary stuff. I would say I'm pretty critical on all of the new stuff, as my love lies with vintage. The 25th Anniversary line has been really nice for the most part, with a few duds here and there, and even a few "WTF" figures. I've especially enjoyed all the remade vehicles. From the pics I've seen this far, all the movie stuff blows IMO.
