In the case of CP W1, I'd say that the figure choices were a tad boring (compared to what's coming anyway), and that may part of the reason be why they aren't selling as well. Although, none of the W1 comic packs seem to be selling that well, and this could also be because they are essentially repaints. Some fans (myself included) may consider this laziness on the part of Hasbro, and therefore aren't supporting this Wave as much as they have or will others. |

To be fair, a LOT of the issues being brought up with the Joe comic packs also appear with the Star Wars sets as well.
I recall when they first came out, the first few cases sold extremely well, but supply caught up fairly quickly and many wave 1 sets lagged at retail. Hell, even when wave 2 hit, the fan considered sure fire hit (set 7 with Quinlan Vos) ended being a significant pegwarmer in many areas. Best selling set of the wave 2 comic packs ended up being the Obiwan/Arc Trooper sets: a retread of a character released numerous times and a minor retool of one of the dozens of Clone Commander molds available. While GI Joe doesn't offer the insane value that the Star Wars sets do, by and large, I don't think the venue or character selection are the problem. For whatever reason, common consumers just don't see the value in dropping $10 for two action figures. $5-7 is the accepted standard for action figure pricing, but for some reason, there is a mental barrier for many at paying $10 for action figures, I've seen people pass up a comic pack in Star Wars in favor of a single card of the same character.

Maybe that is why Hasbro is doing the Doc mail away promotion. To try to get people interested in the Comic packs. Maybe they learned a lesson with the Star Wars comic packs.

The only peg Warmers in my area are the Wave 1 comic packs, and only really the Hawk and the CC/Duke packs. The SE and SS packs are the least plentiful. But even as peg warmers they aren't that bad. Now single cards are a different story, there is nothing sans a few scattered SS v2 or Hooded CC.
A good sign (even if it is frustrating) for the future of the line me thinks. |

In my area depends on the store. Wal-Mart is just now getting comic packs and the wave 1 comic packs sell out at one Target and peg warm another(course some jerk took the pop's out of 6 of the packs and those are a majority of the warmers).

As for my hunt yesterday, the one peg warmer I saw that actually surprised me were the single carded Scarlett at numerous Targets (if you leave in SoCal you know Targets are like 7/elevens, everywhere). This kind of sucks because we're telling Hasbro "you're right, female figures don't sell." Yet I go to TRU and WalMart and they have numerous female characters from those darn wrestling figures.

Also, I neglected to consider earlier that these comic packs represent double the cost of what you would normally pay for a single-carded figure. Add to that Duke/CC repaints, SE/SS repaints, Scarlett/repaint, and you have a Wave that most aren't running to their local big box store to buy.
In all fairness to W1, I'm glad these are out there. Fans old and new alike ARE buying them. They just aren't buying them as quickly as W2. |
