Women have certainly been in combat ever since they had to protect their homes while their menfolk were away raiding other people.
As far as modern military special forces go, women haven't traditionally found easy entrance, but that is slowly changing. I read that the Swedes have found that having women in the field is very useful for any kind of work that involves interacting with a civilian population - hearts and minds type stuff. So it isn't just about whether to give women access to frontline combat for the sake of sexual equality. There are legitimate military functions where they bring something useful to the table that men perhaps don't often do as easily.

Well it depends on the relationship that needs building, and with whom. If you're operating in a society that's unapologetcially male dominated, bringing a female soldier to a meeting with the village men or elders may not be a great idea. But having a woman on hand to get to know the women is certainly going to be a military asset.
On the darker side, some women have proven themselves capable of less pleasant sides of say intelligence-gathering in ways that many men may not be. I am sure that women have been used in this role for many years, but sometimes this happens in the field where you have 2 hours or 10 minutes to get a prisoner to loosen his or her tongue. I get that special forces all over the world have very tough physical standards to enter that few men pass and even fewer women have a chance at passing. Whether separate entry standards for women is approprite probably depends IMO on whether you take the approach that every soldier has to have the same basic abilities, or rather if you accept that women bring their own strengths to a team that men can't replicate. And as far as actual fighting goes, the Russians famously used women in combat roles including helicopter piloting and sniping. Few women are psychologically and physically cut out for combat, but then again, most men in a given population aren't "natural fighters" either. There's some fascinating stuff in the book "On Killing" on the psychology of the soldier. |
