I never really understood why people think that toy collecting is stupid. I guess because I've been collecting for so long. It makes people happy and it's a lot better than doing drugs and other stuff. I think some people are afraid to admit that they love geeky stuff so they don't feel like a geek. Geeky is just normal for me.

Because their intended audience is children, and we are grown men?
For the record this has obviously done nothing to hinder my collecting, but clearly the reason is because at some point in life we are supposed to "grow up". It also doesn't help that a large portion of the people that collect represent a really embarrassing stereotype.

All of my friends think my toy collection is very cool. I find that the geeky stuff comes out of others once they know you also have a geeky side. My Collection seems to be an ice breaker.

In order to grow up most people think you need to put away childish things like toys. They don't want other people to look down on them. Ironically they go out and spend money on big boy toys (boats, 4 wheelers, etc.) to compensate. I've never really understood that line of thinking. Do what makes you happy, if other people don't get it FUCK'EM!

Because it's a never ending process. You can never have enough and you will go broke chasing after stuff you should have out grown when you hit your teens. I still "dabble" here and there (because I can't stay away either....it truly is a sickness) but even I at one time or another felt stupid for all the money I spent on "plastic crack". I like to display my stuff and I enjoy looking at it but in all reality I don't need any of it. Not trying to bust anyones balls....I collect too or I wouldnt be responding

It's not considered normal, and society enforces normality.
Unfortunately it's just as important to make sure others are part of the herd as it is for an individual to make sure he or she is part of the herd. You don't want to be food for predators, right? We really haven't had much more than a generation for major toy collecting, and once we have more people who can say, "Yeah, my father used to collect those," it'll get a little better. If people see an eighty-year-old guy today wearing a conductor's cap and running model trains, they don't really say much. It's his hobby, and something for him to do. But there have been model trains for generations. Otherwise, yeah, I really don't get the idea behind acting like you're put out by someone else doing something that makes them happy. I'm not sure why "growing up" is leaving behind what makes you happy but not leaving behind the playground attitude that what makes a person different makes them wrong. |

I feel that many of the people that hate on toy collectors are just doing it to make themselves feel better. The I'm better than that person because I don't do that mentality.
I don't understand it. If someone has a hobby that they enjoy, and it doesn't harm others, even if it's something you don't like who cares. Everyone does it. I'd be willing to bet some people that don't understand why toy collectors are judged, also judge die-hard sports fans, car enthusiasts, motorcycle enthusiasts, horse enthusiasts, golfers, train collectors, hot wheels collectors, etc.... I try to look at a hobby as the happiness that it gives someone and be happy for them. I want my joy to come from my hobby, not from thinking that I'm better than someone because of theirs. I feel most sorry for those that have no passions, hobbies, or ones that damage their lives and families.
