Iv'e never really had anyone judge me, they might look at me oddly when they find out but i could care less. People do much stranger things then collect toys, so to me its just a normal thing.
Iv'e been collecting forever now, its a huge part of my life and at times ive had to catch myself from going overboard. It's hard to justify spending a certain amount of money on a toy that sits on your shelf. I learned this the hard way when i was really into transformers. OMG you think gi joes are expensive, go start collecting TF's and you will want to just quit unless you make a good amount of money. I think with collecting you just want to have it all as quickly as you can get it, atleast thats how it's always been for me. You have to live within your limits and be patient or before you know it, you might have a serious plastic crack addiction. I lost one of the most meaningful realtionship's iv'e ever had, mostly because i couldn't stop being selfish and realize i had a down ass girl. I had all my bills and priority's taken care of, i just forgot about my g/f. It's kind of funny and really sad at the same time. But i got so caught up with collecting that i took her for granted and she just kind of got pushed aside like a old vintage fig. We just drifted apart. By the time i realized what had happened, it was too late, she didn't want to be with me anymore. Iv'e been chasing amy ever since. |

I never really understood why people think that toy collecting is stupid.
If you're 30+ years old and you're comfortable telling your colleagues that you collect toys (technically that are meant for children) then prepare to be burned. There are some given things that people would not understand that are better left unsaid. Quote:
I think some people are afraid to admit that they love geeky stuff so they don't feel like a geek. Geeky is just normal for me.
Let's face it, adult toy collectors are just a minority of this world. The world will not adjust to adult geekiness, rather we as adults should be mature and responsible to adjust to this world that are occasionally outspoken to our type of geekiness. Oh, and let's not compare toy fans with sports fans, car fans, art fans, animal fans, or any other adult-related fandoms. It's a flawed analogy, a product that targets a juvenile audience is usually not the same as a product that targets an adult audience.

Oh, and let's not compare toy fans with sports fans, car fans, art fans, animal fans, or any other adult-related fandoms. It's a flawed analogy, a product that targets a juvenile audience is usually not the same as a product that targets an adult audience. the only "adult" fans in my mind are fans of alcohol, porn, and other items that you have to be 18 or 21 to partake in. that would be a truly exclusively adult hobby. being a fan of GIJOE for me anyway, has nothing to do with toys it has to do with pop culture. Think about it. geek culture is based on comic books, tv, cartoons, movies sci fi, or fantasy. It is also generational. the Generation before us (our parents) loved westerns. They bought toy six guns and cowboy hats. Played cowboys and indians, heck we even played cowboys and indians. The sports analogy does ring true because those fans, pick their teams based on where they lived or grew up OR the team that won the superbowl when they were 10, OR the team their parents were into, or they were on a baseball/football/basketball team in their youth and dreamed of the Major Leagues one day. It starts in childhood. Some of us had our passions ignited by a cartoon and or comic book, others had passion ignited by a sports team. You know why I like the Bears? Superbowl 86, You know why my friend likes the Steelers? Superbowls 9 10 and 13 his dad? the Packers. see the pattern? How many adults do you know who say"yes I just started watching football this year and my favorite team is_____.? Not many. it is ignited in our youth, whether it be stamps, trains, or bugs on a stick in a shadow box. That is the common denominator. Passions that evolve in our youth for whatever reason, proximity, aping parents behavior, popularity, or it just clicks. It is different for everybody, Some people just cant grasp the bigger picture and the similarities. They think narrow-mindedly about it.

I'm a proud Joe collector but I don't proactively speak and definitely not brag of it in the open unless someone asks me about it. Not branding yourself in the open that your a toy collector is not being a coward nor embarrassed of your passion, it's being rational and smart not to be ridiculed by other people who will never understand our hobby. Let's face it, adult toy collectors are just a minority of this world.
