Toy collecting is one of the last hurdles for geeks.
Comic Cons are almost mainstream, comic books have been turned into popular movies, video games are earning tons of $$$. The geeks have won. |

Some collect Barbies. Some have model trains. Some collect stamps. Some collect rare books. Some collect cars(Jay Leno). Some collect shoes. Some collect whatever they can get their hands on(hoarders). Some collect guns. Probably more nowadays. If it makes you happy and doesn't get you busted by the cops, (or FBI, or Homeland Security).

My short answer is this:
Many folks out there never had an interest in anything creative or fun. Sort of sad, but there are types like that. They also do not like artistic pursuits, because maybe they feel they are not good at it, or that it does not provide a way to make a lot of money. Some people have no connection with cartoons, comics or fantasy subjects at all. Some people might laugh if you said you enjoyed Science Fiction novels or stories. You can imagine that they also might not like comic books, or the characters associated with them. GI Joe collecting to me is very much connected to toy soldier collecting, which is not a new hobby at all... Been around a long time. If we compare the level of quality that exists now in the action figures we collect with what was, well, those same toys were quite a bit simpler in design. The sculpts of the figures, the articulation, and the accessories available have created a "toy" that is really much more mature than it ever used to be. Usually I can show most anyone a modern action figure, with detailed accessories, and even a highly realistic vehicle of some sort that is in scale to the figure. Those people are mostly pretty impressed with it, regardless of any past interest. Most people have an appreciation for realistic miniatures. GI Joe's, Star Wars, Marvel and DC Super Heroes are just some of the many well done scale figures out there. These days they are made more like realistic statues that "pose" more that toys. Man... That wasn't really a short answer was it? Bottom line is to like what you like, and if other folks don't get it, then they probably don't "get" a lot of things. Yay! My two cents.

There's a fantastic quote you can spout off should anyone challenge your toy collecting. Not that it needs to be defended, but you get my drift. Anyhow, without further adieu..."you don't stop playing because you grow old; you grow old because you stop playing." And it's customary to end it on a "bam bitches how do you like them apples" note.

Because people are judgemental assholes. If it wasn't toy collecting it would be something else. I stopped caring about people and their opinions loooooooooooong ago. Life's too short, and as long as it isn't negatively affecting someone else, enjoy the hell out of it.

I think it's all perspective. I think it's stupid to collect beanie babies, thimbles and decorative spoons, but some people do it anyway, and my negative opinion of their interests sways them not one bit.

Thanks for the comments. It's just weird to me how some people don't see most geeky stuff for it's awesomeness.
