So, I've just recently got into collecting Joe's. I had tons and tons of stuff as a kid so I thought it would be fun to get into collecting the stuff I grew up on in the 80s and early 90s.
The house we currently live in is just big enough for my family and I. Its only a 3 bedroom and we have 3 boys. Needless to say, I don't have my own room for my stuff right now. Its one of the things we are looking for in our next house when we move in a year or so. As of right now, I have a 6 foot tall bookcase with 5 shelves to display my stuff on that I just bought and its in our bedroom. Anyway, my point to this thread is (and forgive me if there are others about this already), what exactly do you do with all your Joe stuff? Is it all displayed? Only some of it displayed? Do you set up little "battle scenes" with them? Do you actually play with them? It may sound goofy but I tried to actually play with them this evening after everybody was in bed. It felt kinda odd, I have to admit. When I started buying stuff a few weeks ago, I thought to myself how cool this would be or how neat that would be in an "if I were to play with them" kind of way. I've always stayed a kid at heart pretty much. I still read comics, I collect the old DC Super Powers figures also. Play video games, wrestle with my boys. All that good stuff. As neat as it was to mess around with them all for a bit, I couldn't help feeling like a huge dork and I ended up stopping not too long after. Is this normal? Am I the only one that has done this only to feel this way? What even weirder is I WANT to play with them. My wife doesn't give a crap. She knows I'm a big nerd so thats not an issue. My kids love when I play with them with their stuff. Then again, they are only 7, 4, and 2. I should be able to play with my toys if I want and not feel like a big tool, right (or not so much?) I guess I'm looking for somebody to tell me that I'm a little off, I shouldn't play with them. Or maybe that others do it as well and its no biggie, do what you want, etc, etc. I kind of would find it hard to justify spending so much money on this stuff to just let it sit on shelves and collect dust forever. So yeah, any thoughts to my...whatever this is? |

Play with, set up, whatever you'd wanna call it. And double unopened sets for posterity.
I still make machine gun and missile sounds when I open them, and create teams of guys with certain parameters. I take them outside and snap photos of them in battle. I even think of cool cross-over stuff and histories for events I think would be cool to imagine. Right now, I have Hellboy 3.75 in a headlock from Nemesis Immortal 3.75. I def play still. It's cheaper and better, and healthier than heroin. Last edited by MLos1; 01-07-2009 at 04:53 AM.. |

Dude, toys are like a time machine. They take you back to a time when things were a lot easier and happier. If a person finds something thats make them happy, by all means go for it.
Do I play with my joes, transformers, silverhawks, he-men, and other toys. Of course not that for LOSERS....1 sec Grimlock and Slag are calling me ATTTTAAAACCCCKKKK!!!!!!! |

Seriously- there are many ways to enjoy our collections of little soldiers... but what is play and what is not?
If I test the limits of a figure's articulation, wowed by how much more lifelike they've become, deeply respecting the art of crafting these figures, and it involves a little bit of creative posing to see if this guy can headlock that guy or if these 3 guys can all hold this rifle the same way or whatever- am I playing? If I take 3 hours to set my Joes up in a battle scene on my shelves, wanting to get it just right for a nice display, and while doing so I imagine the Baroness commanding these Vipers to destroy the hapless team of Joes cornered behind the burning car, making the occasional brrrrrap sound- am I playing? If I'm watching a UFC match, and Mir is pummelling the hell out of Silva, and I flinch with the hits and occassionally utter "oof" on a big kick or "Tsah" with a punch- am I playing? If I'm sitting in my car and a Ferrari pulls up next to me and in my mind I imagine jumping off at the light and racing it down the street, and in my musing I grip the steering wheel and kind of feel a little vvrrrrrrooooom-- am I playing? Tinker with your joes if you want, find what helps you enjoy them and don't feel bad doing it. All intelligent creatures play. Who are any of us to judge the play of anyone else? Oh and by the way, having your wife KNOW you're a big dork and love you for it is THE BIG WIN. Think how many supposed "cool" guys will never find someone that accepts the inner them....pity.... Now as for what to do with your joes... I find that sometimes when I'm not looking, little teams of Vipers and EELs will set up ambushes around the house- they seem to prefer concealing themselves in houseplants. They shy away from the knife-heavy kitchen |

Since you can't take them with you when you die, I'd open them up and play with them with your friends like it was back in the 80s.

I play, but I have to clean up my room.
There are two eels lost in my room. It is fun to still play with toys. Sure, it may be dorky. But thats why its fun. |

dude you are not alone, when i first got back into collecting, the first thing i did was try playing with my joes, lol i felt very odd and it just wasnt the same as when i was kid but it was fun for a min.
then i became a moc collector and hung everything on my wall. lately i have been wanting to just free all my joes from there plastic prisons and display them on shelves but i just cant come to opening them so i have decided to buy doubles. which will be costly but cool for me since i like having all my moc joes hanging on my wall. anyway i have been really wanting to build diorama's and do joe battle scenes, stuff like that. also i am most intrigued how to learn how to do card art and start making custom joes. i think now that we are older, custom joes are the closest to interacting with my joes as it will get since playing with them doesnt do it for me. its like the grown up way of playing. so those are some ideas for you. even now when i buy my joes i imagine in my head little battle scenes for each new guy, or notice how i would like to change the colors of his uniform or add new weapons to him to make him look cooler. do whatever you want with your joes though, if playing with them makes you happy then play away. thats the great thing about collecting is you can do whatever it is that makes you happy. yo joe!

I have some Star Wars stuff that I will never open and TONS of anime stuff that I put in a glass case and just stare at like they were fish in an aquarium.
But I cannot help but to mess around with my Joes... it's in my blood I think. I don't think I could leave a G.I. Joe mint on card if my life depended on it. LOL. |

Whew...
All of these posts made me feel better. Thanks for the replies guys. Its just been so long since I had an urge to actually play around with toys I guess that weren't my kids. Like others have said, it must the inner child I remember from years ago longing to just bust loose and have a good time. Now, if I only had somewhere to do it besides the living room after everybody goes to sleep, heh. Someday I'll have my own man cave (toy room) to do whatever I desire with. |
