Does anyone have any idea how Joes ( or any action figure) are manufactured? I mean, how are they painted? How much is done by machine, and how much by hand if any? I know we will never see something like this on how its made ( damn, in the episode they did on marshmellow peeps they had blankets over the machine that puts on the eyes!!). I was looking at Falcons beret, the line is too straight to have been done by hand, it looks like it was sprayed incorrectly.

I believe the figures are 100% machine painted.

I would love to be a fly on the wall in the factory. I love seeing how crap is made.

Having worked in a couple plastics factories... I can tell you only what I saw. (these were not figures though) There is some imprinting done on some pieces right out of the press. It is like a big ink pad...
But there actually was some kind of expose on this exact thing a few years ago, on how paint apps are done. I wish I still had the link. If I remember correctly, a paint app specific mask is produced. The figure parts are held behind this mask and the paint app is sprayed on. (Anyone else remember this... I don't even remember what line it was for, but I'll see what I can uncover) |

I wonder about this all the time! I always loved factory tours to see how shit is made. When I was a kid, that was my favorite segment on Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. Too bad I don't have cable to watch Discovery or TLC, but then I'd be glued to the tube all day long.
The quality in paint apps is pretty variable (just like the sculpting). It seems as if some is definitely done by machine, but then others (especially store exclusives like the TRU SRO 3 packs) were done by hand - or a pretty inadequate machine. I'm not just talking misaligned paint, but totally botched, slopped over mess. I remember reading or seeing something about this as well somewhere, but for the life of me, I can't remember. |
