I think whatever deal the Club had with Hasbro would eventually expire and then depending on whatever pitch they were able to make to Disney afterwards would determine whether or not it continued or went away.

Don't think that Disney would be so irresponsible in their business dealings that they would neglect looking over the Brand or the vendor who they would license it too. It is an important aspect of their business and Disney understands that. |

I think that the people that currently decide if the club gets to keep the licence would probably continue to decide it. If Disney were to buy Hasbro, they would most likely keep the majority of the current employees because there would be so little overlap between Disney and Hasbro. The only people that would be at risk are the people in the entertainment wing of Hasbro.
And like General Hawk says, the GI Joe Collector's Club would be such a tiny part of the deal, that you wouldn't see anything happen for a long time, if ever. |

Yeah, I could definitely see the club concept going to something bigger. The GIJCC might be a "tiny blip on the radar", but no doubt Transformers aren't, and it's the same company. GI Joe would probably be part of the deal. Whether they get a new club would remain to be seen, but I don't see a Disney/Hasbro partnership taking only one away from Fun Pub and not the other... and I almost certainly see them taking Transformers away.
Assuming this rumour comes to fruition, Hasbro will likely continue to operate more or less as its own entity, but being part of Disney would empower the company to do bigger and better things. And let's face it - I'm thankful for what the Club has done for us, and I appreciate all the exclusives, but it's a pretty low level organization for the most part, and has struggled to remain relevant. I mean, really, I never found the site to be particularly user-friendly, and there's been practically no effort to improve it, even at the most superficial level (e.g. making it look "cool", slick, new, etc.). In this day and age, I still have to FAX my order form in to register for the con? That newsletter is more of a fanzine than anything else. And of course, there was that whole security issue... A Disney-Hasbro relationship would want to reach far more customers than Fun Pub has ever done. It would demand far more than what they could possibly achieve. As fun as the cons have been, I'm sure a Disney/Hasbro partnership is looking at something like Celebration and thinking, why not? Again, if it was just GI Joe... maybe they'd let them continue to do their own thing, but no way when we're talking Transformers, too. For us, it could be good or bad. The exclusives are what I'd be most concerned about. We could potentially get higher quality exclusive figures (think less reused parts) at a lower price... but we could get a lot less of them too, or none at all.

I think this is the most likely event. You're talking about a corporation that turned the whole "club" idea into a dynasty. The mouse loves his clubs.

How does Disney handle any current clubs? I would look at those as examples of what may or may not happen to Fun Pub.

The Mouse will want control...
And I think we'd benefit greatly for it. Just my opinion. I have no facts to back it up. But I'm sure our credit card info would be safer. |
