I will echo the creativity sentiments. I consider GI Joe a creative outlet for myself. I have a group of friends that have all started a writing group; so far, we have tackled short stories and comic books. My comic book project has taken on a life of its own, and I have come to realize, I feel the same way about GI Joe characters that I feel about the characters that I created. I feel like I understand these GI Joe characters and have ownership of them (literal and figurative).
Nostalgia and the tragedies and triumphs of collecting pale in comparison to this creativity factor.

Honestly, they remind me of the few good memories I had as a child. Not to be all boo-hoo and stuff but my childhood wasn't much fun. My mother ran out on me when I was 3 months old and my Dad wasn't able to support me so I ended up living with 5 different people in my family throughout my youth. My Granny, who has always been wonderful to me, bought me the Avalanche and Snakes Eyes V3 for my 10th birthday and I fell in love.
Playing with my Joe's as a child made the world a better place for me. I look back on it and remember how it helped me get through life as a kid, cheesy as that may sound. |

My dad was career army- retired 22 years as a Master Sergeant. He was and will always be my hero. Both my grandfathers were career Army/Air Force- the one fought in WW2, Korea and did 2 tours in Nam, the other did 6 rotations in Nam as a pilot who sprayed Agent Orange.
And then of course I did my hitch and am immensely proud of it. We were living in Germany from 1979-82 and I started to see first hand some of the destruction from WW2 and got my feet wet understanding that conflict then. I began collectiing toy soldiers (and still do to this day). When my dad got assigned stateside in the summer of 82, I discovered these 4 inch GI Joe action figures- it was like seeing my dad and his buddies as "Heroes"- which they are- but it was neat as they each had their own identities- something lost with toy soldiers. GI Joe combines valor, heroism and a deep commitment to teamwork- things I really believe in. I just really enjoy how the Joe team has their own strengths and weaknesses and that it portrays everyday men and women as heros- not caped crusader types.

Childhood memories are always at the foreground of my mind. i'm kinda like Peter Pan ( I never want to grow up).
the world can be a harsh place to live, war, poverty, recession, death, world hunger, why not for a few hours a day gert away from it all and remember when your biggest problem was how are Dusty and Flint going to get to the Cobra Temple and get out alive again with the secret Cobra Plans for world domination. i collect Joes for a few reasons, to relive stress from a crazy day at the office, to feel the love again at the innocence of being a child, to use my imagination as what adventure the Joe forces will get into again, and simply because they are cool. it's pretty much the same reasons as to why i collect other 3.75 lines such as Star Wars, Hellboy, BBI, DC, upcoming Marvel Fury Files, etc, love to recapture my childhood memories and hold on to them.

I collect joes too give me a material hobby as well as the fact they're not space consuming or all that expensive.

Toys in the 80s were just plain awesome. Transformers, Star Wars and GI Joe--it just didn't get any better than this. I played for hours as a kid. Set up huge battles. It was great fun. Great fantasy. And it was so exciting to get a new figure. I loved the card art and looking at the back of the card to see who I didn't have. The feeling was pure. And it's still there. There's just something exciting about opening up a brand new GI Joe twenty years later. And we're obviously not alone. Why GI Joe? Who knows. But for some reason there's a spark of synapses firing in the brain, releasing some pleasure inducing chemical that makes me smile when I turn that aisle and see Airborne hanging from the pegs. It's a strange phenomenon.

EZ, As a kid I was only happy when I was playing with my joes, transformers, and He-Man. Looking at them brings back all the good memories. Plus the trill of the hunt.
