The Flagg is definitely overrated.
I got mine for Xmas, 1985. I had seen pictures of it, yet was still convinced that it would fit under my bed. On Christmas Day, we assembled it in the living room and soon realized it wasn't a toy, rather a piece of furniture. Worse, we had finished building it in the middle of the living room and had GUESTS coming the next day. We had to take it apart and transport it to my bedroom.... where it didn't fit.
We had to reorganize my entire bedroom to fit it. My folks were PISSED. I remember my dad sarcastically saying he would put it in the middle of my room, leaving me 6 inches to "tip toe through the crap" in my daily routine. I was shocked and felt guilty over this $115 piece of plastic. We finally made it fit by moving my bed against the wall. The result was manageable..but was difficult to run anything down the launch ramp when it would immediately hit a wall upon take-off.
About a year later, I got to move everything down into the basement and could finally feel allright about my Flagg. But then I realized... it was just a big shelf for the Skystriker. It wasn't even in "real" proportions. More like a "mini aircraft carrier". It worked better with just the Conquest... but then where was I supposed to keep my Skystriker? It soon became strictly a shelf, as it was tough to work it into storylines. It really has/had a LOT of unnecessary space.
I got the Defiant a few years later and that thing rocked. I don't think a single inch on it was wasted. Several gun stations, the booster rocket opened up, the launch complex had several compartments... just amazing. It didn't just sit there and I could work the entire thing into stories. Plus, it actually packed up pretty well and didn't take up TOO much space. It was worth every penny and made up for my negative experience with the Flagg.

The Flagg may be a little over rated, but I think the Terror Drome is way over rated. To fully play with either play set, you have to have it in the middle of a room as there's stuff all the way around it. The TD doesn't have much to do other than the elevator/silo doors while the Flagg at least has an area for vehicles and an area for figures.
What's unfortunate is that the Defiant has the most playability out of all the playsets, but apparently a lot of people hate space ships :( Not only is the Defiant 3 vehicles which are also playsets themselves that can all interlock in vehicle mode, or just have two of them interlock in playset mode (Shuttle and Station) but there's so many little details that are full of imagination like the airlock when you dock the shuttle to the station, the space walk tether that attaches to the backpack (The same hole in the backpack allows you to attach it to the wall of the spacestation next to the airlock) or even the foot pegs on the bottom of the floors so that you can simulate zero gravity! Friggin stroke of genius!

Im not really a Flagg Fan. I am with you on the whole skystriker shelf thing. My buddy had it back then and I thought some parts were kinda WANK. No real Hull to speak of, WAAAY out of proportion. and just not enought interior space was my thought when I seen it. The Mic part was dumb to me as a kid.
I was a Defiant kid. I had the defiant that Xmas and I have no problem with saying the Defiant was the BEST toy Hasbro has EVER made. the amount of detail blew the Flagg out of the water (no pun intended) and the features that it actually DID was staggering.
The Flaggh didnt REALLY DO ANYTHING. YES it looks cool, and it IS a carrier, but what else?
The Defiant Gantry could hold about 50 figures, guns ALL over it, a VERY detailed driver control room, an entire TWO ROOM mission control section, and it rolled.
The Booster/Spacestation had pegs everywhere, even ON THE CEILINGS to similate zero G. It had a bridge reminicent of a star trek bridge. hidden guns on the sides with eachs own control station.
The Shuttle had retractable landing gear, a opening payload section, Concealed weapons in the nose, a robot arm, and one of the BEST COCKPITS the toy line has ever seen.
On top of THIS ALL< the shuttle could dock with the spacestation, and in the payload section it had a hatch that when Placed ON TOP of the open spacestation, LED to an "AIRLOCK"
There is NO comparison in terms of play value and what you got for your money when you compare the two. One top of it all you got not ONE but TWO GREAT figures. Payload with his MMU and the umbilical cord were just incredible.
If I could get a complete Flagg for $50 I would buy it.
Im still waiting for a MISB defiant to pop up on ebay again, and if it did I would have no problem dishing out a grand for it.
Flagg..looks cool...Defiant was the BEST toy in the G.I.Joe line EVER

The coolest playsets were the mini-bases, like the watch tower and outpost defender. bring along some vehicles to the park and pretend you're in the middle of a forest.

Whether or not the Defiant is cool, not many kids could carry the damn thing. I didn't have it back in the day as I got out before it. But I have it now and that thing is cumbersome even to me.
I don't see how a kid could enjoy such a toy that would require dad to help play with it. Mine is sitting in my work area rather than my Joe room as it is too damn clunky.
My friend and I took an old door we found and built the Flagg on it and were able to carry it up and down the street between our houses so we could play where ever we wanted. He had a HUGE yard and we put it in the middle where I had to defend it with my jets. Made for a great time.

The best post I ever saw on this site was when someone said the millinium falcon is clogging the shelves at 149.00 but if they re-issued the flagg and charged 500 dollars for one at Target you would have to kill someone to get one. LOL

The Flagg is like the GI Joe Holy Grail. I'd love to have one, but I'm not sure what I'd do with it if I had it!
