I was a loner, so I made up my own battles. Of course, the Joe team ALWAYS won.

GREAT THREAD!!! I was on a whole different train! I remember using my screwdriver and doing LBCs, way back then. Hundreds of combos and unlike modern joes every part was swapable!!! The one I remember most was monkeywrench. His head would go on tunnel rat's body and presto... instant Chuck Norris. The 80s were the best!!!

Awesome! My brother lives in Australia while I live in Canada so our 'Joe playing' has had to take a different form ever since. We've been creating a story and maintaining the same continuity since the late '80's! When a character dies, believe me it means something.

I recall this friend having a tendency to have his Joes involved in friendly fire incidents. If your Joes got anywhere near his Joe's "sector" he's have them attack claiming your guys weren't supposed to be in that area. It would infuriate me and my brother. Additionally his "Cobras" would always respawn (even characters like Major Bludd) if you did manage to take them out but usually they'd get the upper hand on your Joes.
Haha! That rocks!

How did I play? I'm 34 and I still play with them! I mostly set up elaborate urban battles using desks, tables, and couches as buildings. Usually the joes had to rescue someone from the main building or they were just doing an all out assault on same building.

I still play....thanks to my 9 year old son!
We do epic battles in the living room and small battles outside. He is weird about taking figures outside and only allows a few at a time. It usually starts Joe but ends with Joe, Marvel Universe, and Clone troopers entering the fray. Its funny as we still spend hours setting up to have to stop and eat before actual play begins . |

I liked to play Joe vs. Cobra ala the cartoons. When I got bored with that I liked to play Rambo (Zandar or Big Boa) against the rest of them (except Wet-suit, which was the friend of the hero). I remember that I had to give the hero the best and cool weapons. Shockwave's knife, Alpine's submachine gun, Roadblock v2 big gun, Tomax and Xamot's rope. I just couldn't help myself.
I also like to play Rocky. First I did it with my MOTU figs and later with Zandar as Rocky and my Secret Wars Iron Man as Ivan Drago. And as a latin american, soccer is a big deal to us, I liked to play endless soccer games and tournaments. I remember that Mindbender was the best goalkeeper and the Crimson Guard the creator. Of course the result of the game was decided by dices... I was forgetting that I liked to play WWF too. Pure tag team tournaments, the best wrestler was Slaugther.

I remember setting up scenarios in my bedroom, ambush. There was also this big cliff-like white sand mound several feet high, made a great place to dig caves. I remember rolling my vehicles down a mountain slope in Tennessee.

It wasn't until recently that I started taking my Joe's outside. I used to play with them exclusively inside, and usually by myself. None of my friends were into GI Joe like I was.
When I played, I imagined that it was a GI Joe series. I even had an opening sequence that I would repeat everytime before I played with the same figures, and a theme song I would beat box. I even did the announcer voice stating that GI Joe was a highly trained special missions force etc...I would usually play for an hour at a time since that was how long the episode lasted. After playing out a GI Joe episode, I would use my Joe toys to play other storylines. For example I had some Joe figures go up against the Predator in a story called "Behind Enemy Lines". I also used them to play out Star Wars stories, and the Joe's would become new and existing Star Wars characters. I played out my own version of the movie Cliffhanger starring Joe's with Cobra's as the bad guys.
