With the popularity of the 25th anniversary figures and the release of a movie in 2009, is this not the perfect time to re-release the original G.I. Joe cartoon series? Not the crummy one made by DIC, the cool 80's series with all the original characters is what I'm talking about. So what gives? These sets would sell like hotcakes!
So what do you think? Is there a good possibility that the cartoon series will be released again? Let us all hope so. Yo Joe! |

I'd like to see them re-released...all of them. Even the DIC episodes.

*begin rant
Everything was great till Arise Serpentor Arise! G.I. Joe: The Movie was a travesty. I read an interview with the writer of the animated series a few months ago. The creators were coming up with a character similar to Karl Marx, as in he created a philosophy which Cobra Commander exploited. This would have taken the series in a darker, more mature direction. Instead, Hasbro and the toymakers told them to write a story for a new Cobra Emperor, one that hadn't been seen before. Hasbro was presented with two ideas: either Cobra Commander was just a figurehead for something even bigger, or Cobra became disillusioned with CC and made their own new ruler. Hasbro decided on both! Thus the Serpentor storyline was introduced, followed by the stupid movie. Cobra-La was even just a placeholder in the script, with a cooler name to follow. Hasbro decided that they liked Cobra-La. Following the movie, with Cobra destroyed, there were plans for a new enemy to be introduced-The Coil (headed by the twins Tomax and Xamot), a deadlier and more realistic terrorist organization. The series was to once again hopefully take a darker tone. Instead, Hasbro took an offer from a crappy Canadian company to make new cartoons aimed at a younger audience. Filled with Scooby-Doo sound effects and bad slapstick, the franchise died. Let's hope the creators of this movie don't go in the same direction and insult their audience. NO LASER GUNS! We've grown, and so should they. Last edited by tkprime; 11-30-2007 at 09:24 PM.. |

Yes, with the rights still in flux though... I mean you would think someone would have snapped up the Transformers series to RELEASE RIGHT NOW with the super TF-hype of the new movie but nope. Even the brand new anniversary release of the 1986 TF Movie has gone outta print. All the rights to Joe, TF's, Jem, & a good percentage of Sunbow are up in the air. Luckily Disney let BCI have D&D, but Disney still has Spiderman & His Amazing Friends & are doing nothing with it. When these series do get licensed...hope a company like BCI gets them, the He-Man, She-Ra, and D&D sets are PHENOMINAL, even their releases of less desired series like Prince Valiant & Flash Gordon are top-notch. When Sony planned on releasing the TF TV show a while back, they were just going to release the same versions as the Rhino versions (prolly in different packaging) but they still were going to have the same conetent as was evidenced in that 1 Warehouse exclusive release, they did an ok job with the new 86 TF Movie DVD release, with adding new content but... a company like BCI would really make the new versions of the DVD's worth it with COOL extras.
Hasbro said at Joe Con they were looking to get the original series back out there but who knows when someone will actually step up...(even Sigma 6 looks like it won't come out) alot of the most popular cartoons of the 80's are in limbo or were so limited in their initial release & would really stand to make a profit in a new release now. I actually mentioned these point to hasbro, at the convention in Atlanta back in Sept. (along with an idea to re-release the Movie with a two pasck of Big Lob and Pythona, the two figures we DIDNT get from the movie)
It looks like everything is riding on the movie, if it is a Hit, we'll probably get everything we've asked for, but if it bombs,.. the franchise is finished.

I'd buy it on DVD to get it in better quality as getting the Rhino releases are nigh impossible and expensive. I bought a bootleg DVD copy of the entire Sunbow series including the movie. Okay quality EXCEPT for the episodes in which were not released by Rhino. Also about 4 of the eps skip through scenes as if the DVD burner had a hard time copying at that moment.
I thought the show took a MAJOR nosedive right after Arise Serpentor Arise. It's as if they were focusing on the movie during the making of the second season and not paying atention to quality of the show. There were a few good second season episodes though but the overal quality felt crappy. The movie was okay for the most part and Operation Dragonfire was kind of cool for putting Cobra Commader back in control. THe DiC series was corny though. Cool for an 8 yr old but corny for adult fans.

Hey Rodimus do yours have the HQ Productions title screen because mine do and several episodes skip-- or just the DVD player has a hard time reading the disc.
