it may be a weird question, but has anyone ever set up some sort of flowchart (or similar diagram) showing exactly who outranks who, what their specialties are, what troops they command, etc?
i'd be most interested in knowing if there's (not counting pure fan speculation) some official or semi-official hierarchy for how one moves through the ranks. for instance, does one start as a trooper or a viper? it seems like vipers are the lowest of the low, but their equipment looks like it would cost more than the basic trooper uniform, and i'd think the more expensive equipment would go to the guy higher up the food chain. (figure in the way the basic trooper was re-released as "viper" once or twice in the vintage line, and it gets more confusing.) or how about what "career track" one would have to go on to become a crimson guard? do crimson guards technically outrank cobra officers? are normal "siegies" equal to their python patrol and desert (or any other hostile environment versions we've yet to see) equivalents? and who's higher up: a crimson guard commander or a crimson guard immortal? yeah, maybe i'm insane, but i've always wondered about weird stuff like that.

one of the older Devils Due comics had a flow chart in it ( think one of first 12 issues) it was not as complex as your idea, but its a start.

We could take that Cobra leader/group thread mix it with this thread and create a flow chart

Here is goes, but I'm basing this off of my knowledge of the military ranks and my joeverse:
Cobra Blue shirts division: Trainee: Basic guy with a face covering and cover alls. Get trained by Big Boa at boot camp. Trooper: The canon fodder of the Cobra army. Can be upgraded to officer. Officer: Officers watch over divisions of 4 vipers. If Officers show that they are worthy, they then can be upgraded to Vipers. Viper division: Viper: Vipers are the basic stormtroopers of Cobra. They have more technology and are better skilled. However, this doesn't guarantee much. Viper officers: Same as the vipers. Only with gold face plates. The Viper divisions: When a viper shows special aptitude and has served for a year without being killed. They can train in one of the many specialized programs. However, Televipers do not require boot camp, only basic weapon courses. Viper communication corp: These Vipers aren't quite as advanced as the field of engineers. It includes only one field, because it is basic easy work. This is an entry level force that is culled from your local cellphone dealers. Televipers. The Viper engineers corp(for vipers who have excelled in combat and have good scores in math and science)- Techno, Laser, Shadow, etc. Advanced knowledge of technology is required for this field. The Viper combatants: For those who have shown high proficiency and mastery of weapons. These are more or less specialized grunts. These fields include: SAW, HEAT, and any other heavy weapon forces. Vipers must have strength. The Aerospace Viper corp(Strato, Heli, Gyro, Aero, Star, Astro): These Vipers must take aerospace engineering classes and undergo 4 years of pilot training for the more advanced planes. The Viper Mech division: These vipers are the ones who took automotive repair and engine repair. Requires advanced knowledge of vehicle mechanics and how to safely drive the vehicles. Entry position: HISS drivers(blue), Motor Vipers, Track Vipers The Viper Science divisions: For those with degrees in chemistry or microbiology. These require mastery of either a BA or MA in one of the many sciences. Combat skills aren't required, as much as the ability to distribute chemicals or spread disease.(Mega, Cyber, Sludge, Toxo, Heavy Water, Nuke Vipers) Viper Punishment: For those vipers who have failed to meet the quota in any of the above fields or are incompetant. This work is often pointless labor and is given to vipers who have low test scores or exhibit an inability to do the work that is given. Toxo-viper manufacturing, Desert Scorpion, Cooks, Janitor Viper, etc. This is roughly the same The Crimson Guard: All these soldiers must have a BA, MA, or PH.D and undergo 4+ years of military training. They must also be a lawyer or a professional on the side. CG Mechanical division: Avacs, Red HISS drivers CG Advanced weapons corp: Crimson Guard Immortals CG Command: Tomax, Xamot and CG commanders. Advanced special forces: Eels, Night Viper, Para Vipers, Alley Viper, Snow Serpents/Ice Vipers, Lampreys, Incinerators. All require the top vipers who have trained in one or more fields. All must be extremely proficient in one or more fields. Cobra Commander personally selects the individuals in these forces. Thus, they are more of six man squads as opposed to armies. |

This isn't Cobra's rank structure, but I thought you all would get a kick out this guys GI Joe Rank Structure by year by year ranking.
I believe he got all the Ranks off the File Cards. Interesting to see how many change ranks year after year. Complete Guide to G. I. Joe: Joe Team Rank Structure, 1982-1985 |

Ive always considered the Blue Shirts regular army and the Vipers either specialized troops/special forces of some type or most commonly Cobras Marine Corps.

This is from Wikipedia regarding Vipers & Blueshirts only:
Command as opposed to that of the basic Cobra Troopers. Both characters are listed as being "Infantry" and as being at the "bottom" of the Cobra hierarchy. Some fans have assumed that the Vipers were meant to replace the more generic Cobra Troopers from before however the Cobra Troopers would continue to appear in both the G.I. Joe comic books, cartoon series and eventually the action figure line alongside Vipers. Other fans speculate that the Vipers and Troopers are actually one and the same and their difference in appearance is chalked up to there being different divisions of Cobra Infantry. This position seems to be further backed up by a G.I. Joe collector card featuring the artwork for the basic Cobra Trooper but the name and file info of the standard Viper.[17] In 1998 Hasbro released a "Cobra Infantry Team" 3-pack in in which both the Cobra Troopers and Officer were simply repaints of the 1986 Cobra Viper.[18] While this may suggest to some that Vipers are Troopers are indeed the same thing the filecard suggests otherwise: "The Cobra Troopers are the most basic, bottom-of-the-barrel soldiers in the Cobra regime. They have to work their way up to even become Vipers".[19] This text would be repeated on further filecards included with Cobra Trooper figures.[20] With this being the official word from Hasbro, some fans rationalize that the Vipers are maybe more like Cobra's version of the Marines. That being that they are still basic troops but more elite than the regular Cobra Troopers. Other fans believe the Vipers are more along the lines of Cobra's version of the Army Rangers, while the Blueshirts are more like standard Army. |

Come see us on the "what secrets lurk in filecards" thread for some really good fanboy attempts at this.
