I'll be the first one to tell you that I am not a fan of the silly toys the original line was turning to in the late eighties...
The pogo ball was one of them, I thought it was a silly idea. I always thought the Mamba was weird too, with the double rotors... I'm also not a fan of collecting ARAH toys, I told my wife I'd only collect the new 25th line, but lately I'm starting to really like those two vehicles.
I've been re-reading the Marvel comics and one issue's art blew me away back then, and still does today...
Issue 64, "Maneuvering for Position" (getting re-released as a new comic pack, by the way.)
The splash page is amazing... two Mambas strafing a fishing boat approaching Cobra Island with Fred and the Pogo. He blasts off just as the Mambas blow the boat to smithereens. Then Fred takes out a Mamba before Serpentor orders the ASPs to destroy the pogo and the second Mamba. However before they do Fred ends up taking out the Mamba with a missile and is able to land and begin his impersonation.
I love the art, the flow, the dialog of that issue so much that I started wanting the pogo battle ball and the Mamba. eBay here I come. After getting outbid on every pogo for a month or so I finally found one MIB for $25 (I know, that's expensive, but I'll get to apply the decals and assemble it myself.)
I also am currently bidding on a 100% complete Mamba with pilot, file card and unapplied stickers. (I hope I get it at a low price.)
I can not wait to get them!
Here's the comic pages I was talking about, by my all time favorite GI Joe artist... Ron Wagner.

The Mamba kicks some ass. Never really cared for the Pogo, I thought it was a little lame to be honest. The Mamba always seemed like a real vehicle, not the Pogo

Love 'em both. Always have and always will. These two vehicles (esp. the Pogo Battle Ball) get dissed a LOT on the internet, but I think they're great. As a kid I was a big fan of the Pogo and I played with it a ton. And I got the Mamba as a birthday present from a buddy of mine at a party at my house that year and I immediately fell in love with it.
It's not a popular sentiment around here, but I'll say it. The Cobra Mamba and Cobra Pogo Battle Ball are two of my top favorite vehicles of the entire line. People criticize the Pogo all the time and I really feel it's undeserved. They talk about how unrealistic it is and such....but come on.....a LOT of great vehicles aren't all that realistic. It's a great vehicle.

Commander Hawk, you are exactly right! Who cares what the masses say anyways, right? I hope fans of every era of the ARAH GI Joe ('82-'94) get their favorites made at some point (vehicles and figures). It wouldn't be fair otherwise as every year of Joe is just as important as the other to many different people. The Cobra Mamba is definitely one of Cobra's best airborne vehicles (I like the Rattler and the Night Raven a little better, though).

I think the Mamba really would have benefited if they had scrapped the extraneous pods.

I think it comes down to suspending disbelief.
I had a Mamba as a kid and loved it. I loved any vehicle with smaller detaching vehicles (The Bugg was my favorite of all time!) I didn't know much about real military as a kid, and anything that looked cool was aces with me. That carried into adulthood I think, and now none of that unrealistic stuff bothers me. Bright colors do though.
As for the Pogo, Never have one as a kid, always wanted one.
However in summer of 99 (maybe even was summer of 2000) I went to an outlet store in NH and they had a ton of the Invader (pogo recolor) Vehicles for 1$ I bought them all and had a little invader army. Seeing 8 of them lined up looked really cool, and ever since I've enjoyed the pogo as well. I have 3, but would like 1 MIB
For the record I like the Buzz Boar too. If the 25th guys fit well in it I'd have a ton more than I do.

There are few Cobra vehicles I think are worth a crap beyond 86. I think the Pogo is a little silly, and I don't like the Mamba's purple colors. Many of the Joes vehilces past 86 are more realistic, while you have some pretty "out-there" Cobra vehicles in purple and neon.

I had the Mamba as a kid and LOVED it! The two blast off pods were perfect for top secret insertion missions or better yet, ESCAPE pods! The pogo I never really had as a kid. I never read the comics so I never saw it in action. I'm not neccesarily a hater of the pod, but it doesn't hold for me the same love as the RPV, which is a totally silly vehicle that I love to this day: YOJOE.COM | R.P.V. (Remote Pilot Vehicle)

I love the Mamba, and the Pogo is well... you ever see a dog that was so ugly that it was cute? That's how I feel about that poor scrub of a vehicle.

I always viewed the Pogo as a "lunar lander" vehicle. (maybe the '93 re-release as the "invader" reinforced that idea") But I always used Astro-Viper (Original A.V. in the Pogo, Star Brigade A.V. in the Invader) with it as they battled Payload and Countdown on the surface of the moon... for some reason... hmm... why there was a battle on the moon? who knows?!
