Well they created the insignias back in like 1982 or 1983. I would imagine it was a very small agency back then so I don't think it was owned by anyone else other than those 2 guys.
I found this out through one of my TF connections. Who was your former employer if you don't mind me asking? |

Sunbow Productions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Griffin Bacal owned Sunbow. Hah. That's why the ad agency's name sounded familiar. It was in the credits of EVERY Joe cartoon. |

Correction, DDB bought Griffin-Bacal in the 90s, then G/B merged with Omnicom's Moss Dragoti, thus becoming owned by Omnicom.

Concerning the cobra symbol, you are looking for Mr. Ron Rudat. He was a conceptual artist for Hasbro I believe, and he created the symbol for use in the box art, decals, paint apps, etc. I know because I met the guy at JoeCon 2008.
When I spoke with him he mentioned that his cobra originally had four ribs, but as time went on they increased the number to six and then eight. Not much more I can tell you. I hope this helps. |

I've got the graphic design training!
And I agree, Autobot, decepticon, cobra, all 3 are just about my favorite icons ever, with the Superman S, with its negative space being nearly up there too, among others. All 3 have always been fascinating to me, each is basically a collage of pieces useless on their own, but once assembled, the parts and the emptu spaces between allow the mind to compete the image. All are so simple but original. I would always save these stickers for last on a toy as a reward for an obsessive job well done! Broke my crazy heart that these started coming pre-applied or painted. In my first photoshop class, I remember wasting my entire first period drawing and recreating the autobot icon, with gradient, from a crummy image I found on the Internet, which was then I it's geek infancy, these symbols I was so nostalgic for being difficult to locate with any quality. The transformers, in particular do a great job representing a less threatening, typical good robot face, and a more alien, menacing villain face, although strangely the leaders' faces resemble the opposite faction more than their own, due to random toys being repurposed for the line and assigned a role early on. Cobra is pretty awesome in what's missing from the image. The universal serpentine iconography, internationally, historically, even prehistorically, ranges from a squiggly line depicting the dangerous creature, to elaborate decorative coils that celebrate it's form. Every culture recognizes the long, limbless body as an icon of it's own, and this is entirely absent from the Cobra symbol! How amazing that this collection of shapes can scream Cobra, without even depicting a body segment at all? The only suggested body is in the negative area in the center. And the hood shape is a bit inaccurate to an actual cobra hood, but way more visually appealing. Someone mentioned Swastikas, and all modern disgust aside, it really is an ancient, interesting symbol. So few lines suggest a spinning into infinity. Pretty eye grabbing, almost hypnotic, which I suppose is why it was used, mixed with the striking red and white. Add some striking, extremely fashionable uniforms and you've got a very appealing military for a nation's youth. Cobra was certainly designed with some of this evil manipulation in mind for it's brainwashed drones. So...long story short(whew!) I agree like 2000% or so, your feelings are right up my alley. I'm glad to see these symbols retained for the most part in the feature films, although I do miss the days when they were seemingly my own obsession, or rocking an obscure, pre-Hot Topic T-shirt with one was a personal act of geekery. Not that personal, though, since back then, I'd be stopped on the street by people who were struck so hard by the icon's memory. That's how powerful they are! |
